It's always hard to judge gigs seen abroad against gigs in Dublin because foreign gigs always have that extra added excitement.

So, with that in mind...

abroad
-Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation set at Primavera. Unbelievable.
-Make Believe in Brixton
-ATP sets = Built To Spill, Subtle (especially when Why? joined them onstage), Les Savy Fav, The Books, Akron/Family, Battles

at home
-Joanna Newsom in The Olympia
-Daniel Johnston in Vicar St (before the band came out)
were particularly special

so many others though... Fog, Oneida, Les Savy Fav, Danielson, Qui, Mice Parade, Dan Deacon, Baseball...

and on the local front i really think both BATS and Adebisi Shank have been a revelation.

On one hand you've made the effort to travel for the gig so it's got that going for it. On the other hands foreign crowds are often quite flat compared to here I find.

oops, can't believe i forgot Beastie Boys on the Saturday night of Electric Picnic.
Floored me.

Great gigs seen this year include:

Wrens - Old Whelans - Fucking rock n roll heroes.
Joanna Newsom - Th'Olympia which was fucking spellbinding. Actually lulled me half to sleep it was so peaceful and I've never seen a crowd so hushed.
Wilco - Vicar Street x2 - classic rock in excelsis (corny rock journo cliché ad infinitum)
Dirty Projectors - New Whelans no pedals, no effects just fast as shit guitars, drums and singing.
Animal Collective - Tripod despite Avey Tare's non-singing due to illness, so intense and I was just on a huge AC vibe so much that I couldn't help but enjoy all of it, despite expectations
Glenn Branca et al - Grand Canal Dock which I'm mentioned even tho I was in it - I thought it was fantastic - loud, brutal, jarring and really good fun to play.
Grizzly Bear - Old Whelans Didn't know what to expect but a good way to spend a summer night. Loved the way they got so much out of the minimal line-up and the live harmonies were great. Also covered He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss)
Bill Calahan - The Village was suprisingly charismatic altogether. Better than on record.
