Best before dates are only a new thing, and a load of rubbish I contend.It's a slick business move.None of my Grandparents died from eating gone off food.Old age got 'em for sure.I'd say as was previously said,The nose knows,and if its borderline on the snozz give it a taste.If its meat and it tastes a bit sweet,bin it and go to the chipper.

It totally depends on what it is. Fresh stuff should probably be eaten within the dates on the pack. Ever eaten fizzy hummus? Yeuch.

Stuff like bottled sauces, Marmite, honey etc seem to last forever.

I ate a weight watchers dessert thing yesterday that still had two days left it in and it tasted gone off...(as in, even more gone off than they usually taste)...take THAT, best before dates!!!!

anyone ever had one of those Chinese really really old eggs? They're black and gray in colour:

they're called Thousand Year Eggs. I sometimes get a salad for lunch in the deli on Parnell Street. Yer one behind the counter told me that I couldn't have any when I asked what they were like. .. probably for the best.

and he had hard boiled eggs to go in.
and Paul Merton had one of those CHinese thousand Year Eggs and he asked Boris to taste one.
and eh, he wasn't allowed by health and safety. was pretty funny.
