in my non punk life i work in a community project in new ross and a lot of the local asylum seekers are regulars in the place (our free internet cafe especially).

anyway a few of the women were coming out to the train station tonight for a visit and when i got to the direct provision hostel to collect them there was a big commotion.

turns out the ironically titled reception and integration department of our wonderful government had sent them all faxed letters today to the hostel telling them thet the building was being shut and they were to all move by next thursday at 4.

people are being sent all different places where once agian they will know no one and have no supports. cork, galway, tipp etc with a couple of days notice and no thought as to what links they had in the community etc - like the bastards didnt know this weeks ago and couldnt have at least given people a bit of time to prepare??

the letters are appaling, about 4 lines long - we are informing you -- buses will come for you next week etc, no explanation, no apology for inconvenience.

now you might say so what, we all know the government treat asylum seekers badly but the callous way they did this coupled with seeing people who we are friends with facing being shifted off with a couple of days notice was desperate to see in our gaff tonight and im well pissed off.

they get 19 euro a week and 3 meals a day and can be shunted around with no explanation and a couple of days notice on a froday afternoon when no where is open the next day to try and find out what the fuck is going on.

in a word- bastards.

and the fucker civil servent that wrote and signed the letter - scab fucking wanker .

i can see your point pete but it wouldnt have killed them to explain the reason to people would it, or to use the word "regret inconveniance" or something.

also it's not unheard of for people to take industrial action or refuse to carry out work which is against human dignity eg dunnes workers refusing to handle south african fruit back in the day, french dockers supporting low paid irish ferries workers by refusing to let boats dock recently etc. only doing me job aint always a good enough excuse.

still cant get over the short notice, no way was this decided just yesterday. wonder how much notice civil servants being de centralised will get?

I believe that we are taking in to many too soon, house prices, rental accomadations all gone up because less space because so many people are available and my nephew could'nt get a summer job in McDonalds because they were full of non-Irish.

So why are you connection housing prices to the influx of immigrants? (Which has dropped dramaticly over the last 12 months.)

shit and all that it is conor (and it is shit) - write them a letter saying how surprised you were at the short notice and it may change. They are paid to read your letters too. better still, put up the office and address and we can all send one in.

I can understand Janer about what he's saying about the area around his home filled with coloureds (though one would think he might feel comfortable there, seeing as he's a total sand nigger). Whenever I visit my Ma there's this little Chinese guy who rides her around once a year and who pays her bills and mortgage in return. You can imagine the problems we have communicating, what with my pleasant Irish lilt and his harsh Hong Kong accent, not to mention his total lack of ability in distinguishing his 'L's from his 'R's. I wish he'd go home but he seems to have integrated to an extent. I saw him accidentally watch 'An Nuacht', so at least he's not totally ignorant to this great country and our heritage.

All joking aside, my Chinese cousin tried to get a job in a law firm (he's saving up for a Beamer, bless him), but he couldn't because the position was already filled by a whitey. You can imagine how pissed off he was seeing as he's been living in the country longer than most of them there. Well, the younger ones.
