Oh yeah, avoid Amon Duul I.

Of the Amon Duul II stuff, Yeti is the most song-based and structured -"Soap Shop Rock" and "Archangel's Thunderbird" are classic tunes. It's the best place to start. The other albums are mostly improv. Of the rest, I'd go with Phallus Dei and Tanze der Lemminge.

Aside from Yeti ADII is mostly ploddy space rock muck, Hawkwind were ten times better on average.
