I have some sort of box in the apartment connected to the phone line and I have a wireless router router plugged into that for the wi-fi.

I was never able to get any decent speed on a torrent, and the trauma of working out how to portforward through two boxes was too much for me.

The other evening I downloaded the portable version of miu torrent and I have it installed on a USB.

It's working fine. Not blazingly fast but hitting 70 or 80 kbs (OK it's not great compared to the 400 odd I get a home but grand for TV shows)

What gives, how come the portable works when the version installed on the machine is a pig? Any ideas?

Hey Morman...The box yoke is your modem(no port forwarding there),the wireless router is the only thing that needs portforwarding.....I hate to state the obvious but have you been to http://portforward.com?

It makes a big difference having yer ports forwarded...

OK.
I finally got off my are looked up the passwords for the modem and the WiFi and went poking around.

The wireless router was set with the routing and firewall switched off.

I opened a port on the modem for ABC and ........ fuck all - no difference.

So I whipped out ABC and installed uTorrent. Which is no using a different port than the one I opened for ABC

And I'm getting OK speeds - not lightening fast - about 100kb/s tops.

I'm more confused than when I started!
