Catherine Connolly - barrister, psychologist, fluent in Irish, stepped in as Cheann Comhairle for a while, all round very diligent TD with no ego.

Very strong on the major issues I am concerned with. Yeah, she ticks so many boxes that it should scare chancers off.

Catherine Connoly seems like a good person

But —and you can talk to me like I'm five if you like —the criticisms of her (and Mick Wallace and Clare Daly's) trip to Syria will need to be addressed.

I get that they maintain that NATO and "The West" in general used Assad's regime, and Putin's support of Assad, to hide a lot of their manipulations and crimes against humanity in the region. But it is still seen by many as giving support to Assad and overlooking his obvious war crimes.

Am I just swallowing the mainstream media narrative?

Maybe I've read the wrong stuff but they are really stretching to get assad into the sentence there.

Syria isn't North Korea like, even under assad you could just kinda go there.

What I've seen so far is similar to tying someone going to America with being a Trump supporter.

Also, it's kinda the Presidents Job to talk to people all over the world..

But I see your point, to most Syria/Assad are buzz words

Well, this is it. I'm reading how Assad was a brutal dictator who brutalised his people, with the backing of chief bogeyman Putin. Conolly etc said it's not true, ergo they are in thrall to the brutal dictator
