facebook ate my brain (7 Viewers)

Facebook is litearlly a calendar for me.

you can add your Facebook events feed to google calendar so they just appear on your calendar app or whatever

I haven’t had an official one in years but I have a stealth one for an aluminium neck guitar group, a noise rock group and a few classic Mercedes groups.
That’s it though
Liberating.

yeah I should have been clearer on what I meant - its the way I see whats on in Dublin, gigs, etc.

I keep a bogey FB account with no friends on a trash yahoo email account

I just use it for logging into wifi in pubs and restos when travelling

So I guess I am on there, even if I'm not

Fucking bonkers how it knows all my friends and extended circle though
It has suggested everyone I've ever known to me

Did you give it your phone number?

I don't think so. Not 100% sure. But I think I went in as bare bones as you're allowed to while still having the account.

But I use it from my phone, so there is that

But it's also suggesting people to me that are not in my contacts - like people I went to school with that I don't know anymore

I have an account I made years ago for backgammon, I go through phases of playing it still but I still have the account mainly for the random pakistani and kurdish 'friends' I made. I have a few on instagram too, sometimes they (the kurdish lads) post videos of themselves singing on beautiful mountainsides

I think a couple of them have blocked me. arseholes

I have one too as the child is in scouts so they post stuff on it for parents. Other than that I wouldn't bother. I deleted my main account well over a year ago. I just kept getting triggered by other people's post and all the bragging that goes on.
Exactly
It's a shitshow of pleading vanity - tell me I matter, pleeaaase.

You tell people you've quit and they're all like "I couldn't do that, it's the only way I can keep in touch with my cousins" or somesuch bullshit, when it's really that they can't get off the heroin of people liking their dumb city break photos.

A few days ago, I had to explain to a man in his 40s that the shit he sees on Facebook isn’t t real.
Those happy smiling families don’t exist and the perfect couples are the social media equivalent of John and Mary in Fr Ted.
He genuinely did not get that, was the first time hearing it and thought that’s how life is for everyone else.
Fucked up.

Can't find the other thread.

This wasn't even their algorithm, something a human I know actually shared.
Chickens are cheese making gay dinosaurs.

The typos are I'm sure intentional. Horrible horrible shite.

Without social media it is hard to find about stuff. To the extent a lot of things will pass you by.
I only joined Facebook in October 2023 and Instagram in early 2022. As a very late comer, I can see all the gigs etc I was missing out on now.
I wish social media didn't exist. The internet was long established and going fine before it.
The problem is a lot of people aren't able or don't want to operate outside Facebook etc. this inc. lots of DIY / underground music folks.
Sad but true

Would agree - my sacrifice when getting off sm was to miss out on a lot of local happenings… although I’ve been going to less gigs etc anyway

Between being on a few WhatApp groups (60+ messages some days), Instagram and starting to use Facebook bollocks, I am now one of those people who has their phone in their hands a lot for last few months.
I would have deleted Facebook up until earlier this summer but couldn't figure out how to do it.
At last (small) gig I was at, I was told to buy tickets though Facebook in future 'cause they don't take cash on the door anymore.

I don't follow any family or local friends on any social media. Just stuff I wouldn't hear about otherwise.
So I am more in the loop but I look at the internet a silly amount now.
My Instagram and Facebook pages are blank. I never posted anything on them other than reply to other people's posts.
I never had a smart phone until 2020. Only on long days out was that a problem before.

I deleted my Facebook account a couple of years back because I realised I simply was not interacting on it any more. I do have an Instagram account.
Likewise, I haven't used twitter in months but do browse bluesky.

I don’t go to a whole lot of gigs any more so I think I’ll get rid of Facebook (at least for a while) once the wedding is over. I was in a few good book groups on it but I can find recommendations on Reddit.
I like BeReal too but I’ve only Hives, my daughter and her friend on it. It’s a nice little snapshot into their day.

I don’t even post on Facebook much anymore. I don’t like a lot of people knowing the stupid shit I get myself in to, because my family are annoying dickheads and never let anything go. I mean they great and I love them, but they’re also the worst people I’ve ever met.
