my brother had what appears to have been an epileptic fit today. can't say it was totally unexpected; he had an 'absence' six or seven years ago that they couldn't find a cause for, and a TIA was mentioned then as a possibility, albeit with no evidence found to back it up.
but today, he was unconscious for at least 45 minutes with hallmarks of a full blown fit. bar the absence mentioned above, there has been nothing else in his history close to this. shit buzz.
How old is he? I only developed epilepsy when I was 31 so it can come out of (seemingly) nowhere. Hopefully it’s something that can be easily managed.

Sorry to hear that!

How’s he doing today?
Not too bad all things considered. Though as he joked himself, he missed all the drama. His wife and kids had to deal with that. They're old enough though, 18 and 20; was the last Saturday they had together that his daughter wasn't working, before heading off to some college placement in Paris for the year, so were having a family day out.

one thing he was asked in hospital was did he ever get a smell of burning, and he said that yeah, weirdly, he woke in the middle of the night a week or two ago and smelled what he thought was toast, but knew there was no-one downstairs. i think that actually formed part of the diagnosis.

Fuck it, might as well tell you all:

Cap'n died. There's all of everything going on in my head and also real life. I'm handling it, (except now, obvs) and the community is great. But fuck, I'm just expecting him to appear and offer me a cheese toastie with Marmite or something. But he won't. You know, because he's dead. It's ok, but It is so strange.

The other logistics are manifold. Good posts forthcoming over the next week's and months.

Sorry to hear about this - was on the road all weekend and I'm to old to type on my phone.
Always enjoyed hearing about the guy through you. I'm sure there's more stories to hear in any case.
Spose you can have the odd cheese and marmite toastie now when you want to reflect.

I never had that but it’s a typical “aura” that indicates something is happening in the brain. Doesn’t always predict a seizure but it’s a good sign to lie down just in case. For me, it’s a really strong sense of deja vu.

interesting; i had a spell of incredibly strong episodes of deja vu about 15 years ago, but that coincided with a virus that was not identified (started out with a skin rash often associated with compromised immune systems).
the first, and worst spell of deja vu happened when i was walking into town. it started as i was crossing dorset street and finished as i was passing clery's, so must have been about five or ten minutes long. i ended up having a CT scan in the hermitage, after some slightly comical exchanges in triage and ER.
the australian triage nurse had never heard of deja vu; i had to explain what it was to her, and she wrote it in her notes as 'dezar vu'. when i was finally seen by the doc he was clearly getting annoyed with me, asking me the same questions over and over as i was explaining why i was there, and he ended up barking at me to stop telling him what i'd read online, and to describe how i actually felt. turns out he assumed i could not have known what deja vu was and that i was telling him what google had suggested for me to say.

we need @jonah back for this conversation

What the actual fuck? I know most people are dopes, so probably over time a doctor will start assuming everyone they talk to is a dope, but still ffs. Maybe I need to flash my mensa membership card every time I speak to a doc

Yeah, that was just weird. I assume most people over the age of ten would know about deja vu.
There’s a lot of things that most people over 10 should know but clearly don’t, add deja vu to the list!

But that doctor sounds like a right prick, how many people Google “episode of deja vu” to go have an unnecessary fight with a doctor?
