Those top 500 lists make me realise how fucking white rock and roll or indie or whatever the fuck NME and Rolling Stone pedal really is. There are some undeniably great records in both lists but it seems like Non-white american/british artists don't exist but for some token entries. It really shows to my mind how these magazines and their journos purport to be open minded but really have the tastes of a 15 year old middle class white kid.

The Beatles drove a racial wedge into popular music - before them most racial divisions in music were largely superficial - a lot of white jazz musicians pretended to be black because people thought that black people could swing and jive better, a lot of black musicians pretended learned off their music and pretended they couldn't read music because white audiences liked the idea that the blacks had an innate african ability to play jazz and swing etc. The Beatles started off breaking down all these barriers because they were into black rock n roll and didn't have american racial sensibilities but somehow they managed, in their later years, to pump in more old fashioned european musical traditions in to their rock music and... oh i forget now. I read something about it in this book so whatever it was it must be true.

Agree with Lil on this, even if he does hate Steely Dan.

Most people involved or interested "indie rock and it's various sub genres are middle class.
Working in various warehouse type jobs made me realise I was lower middle class.
