Crumbs, I only seen 'em once, back in 1991 in the Olympia; twere right ruddy good, mind.

I couldn't get anyone to go with me to that 1991 yoke. Bet it was deadly. Columbia Mills was grand but a bit too slick. Actual drummer. Horn section.
For once, I just wanted to see two blokes come onstage with a guitar and an accordion. Was that so wrong?

Far better songs on XO in my opinion. Also shocked by how little you value Roman Candle, was my favourite for years. By now I'd probably begrudgingly give Either/Or top marks but I'd still place it above all the others.

I only really got into Elliott Smith in the last year or so. Have to say that I'd rate Either\Or and XO really highly.

I gave Evol another go on your advice and I'm afraid my opinion hasn't changed that much, although I do like that bubblegum song a lot more now. It's got a great start and end but lags in the middle. Maybe I'd like it more if I heard it on vinyl

I'm pretty much with you on that. I'd give Gold Against The Soul a 7 and I heard Know Your Enemy enough times to give it a 4. After that I assume it's down hill even further.

Sleepflower's a great tune.

They just got so boring
I was always a big fan of this thing.

I think it and the obligatory come as you are were the first songs I learned to sing and play on a guitar that had a hook rather than a chord progression. Good times. Probably can't play either of them now.

Simple Minds
Life In A Day - 6
Real to Real Cacophony - 7
Empires and Dance - 8
Sons and Fascination / Sister Feelings Call - 9
New Gold Dream - 10
Sparkle In The Rain - 6
Once Upon A Time - 4
Street Fighting Years - 2

I got off the bus then. However it was funny seeing people tie themselves up in knots with hatred back in the early 1990s. As if the bombastic Street Fighting Years era meant that all the great early material somehow never existed. Pricks.

Fuck it, I'll do them all as I see it. This assumes you don't hate every single thing about them, which many do:

Generation Terrorists - 9 (gets a few extra points for the sheer audacity, ignoring the massive errors of judgement in production)
Gold Against the Soul - 8 (Ah I dunno, I love it despite having Drug Drug Druggy. The title track is way underrated)
The Holy Bible - 10 (my favourite album of all time apparently. I'd be betraying myself to not give it ten.)
Everything Must Go - 7 (I listened to this again recently and it seems to have aged badly. Hard to pinpoint exactly where though. Still a good album.)
TIMTTMY - 7 - (Better than us haters wanted it to be)
Know your Enemy - 4 (A number of great guitar riffs on this. About 3 good songs and zero good lyrics. Includes a shite attempt to rewrite Stayin Alive with political lyrics :( )
Lifeblood - 8 (A lot better than I realised at the time. Not much in terms of big choruses, but all the better for it)
Send Away the Tigers - 2 (Seriously embarrassingly awful album. Had that big hit lead single that's ok at best)
Journal for Plague Lovers - 7 (Better than it should have been but not quite as good as i'd hoped it would be)
Postcards from a Young Man - 3 (More awfulness. Great lead single on it though...)

That's more like it. Generation Terrorists is fucking fantastic. I love the production, for some reason. Die Toten Hosen on steroids and signing in English. The guitar solo on Crucifix Kiss is one of the best things I've ever heard.
