Gig of the Year - 2008? (2 Viewers)

the focus on old stuff has been coming for a while - since 2000. Last two years have exploded. In the mid 1990s I started getting into soul, funk and lounge in a big way only to ease off for a while. In the last couple of years they started getting aired again along with more purchases of the same ilk. Throw in an increasing desire to know more about 60s psych warriors - who influenced lots of the indie stuff I listened to - which was lead to a kinda marginalising of newer records.

This year I cut down on buying six music magazines a month to three, probably go to two next year. That's meant I'm getting more selective about contemporary material. And more cynical of hype.

The explosion in the reissues market has also influenced me i.e. more stuff to buy.

Having said all that, things could change next year - that's the unpredictable beauty of music.

Besides, you already have the records that make up todays music.
I dont buy new music as I already have it.

MBV - Roundhouse
Fleet Foxes - Vicar St
Skream - Spiegeltent
Kraftwerk - Kilmainham
Sigur Ros - Picnic

im sure there's more but that's all i got for now

raging i missed Morricone in Belfast and Efterklang this year (the latter were one of my fave gigs of 07)

Trying to remember what was this year,

Lots of good shit at Primavera
Xiu Xiu in Whelan's
Melt Banana in Crawdaddy
Ponytail in Whelans
Little Wings upstairs in Whelans
MBV in Glasgow definately tops them all though.

yes! forgot bout that

Yes, I also forgot. Giddy times.

And on a similar buzz, No Age at both Primavera and in Whelans, although I failed to see them fully both times. They harness some serious power. Sleeper Hold is the short song of the year.

1. Silver Jews in (Whelans) - one of the best ever, never mind this year.
2. MBV (Manchester)
3. Beach House (Whelans)
4. Trans Am (Village)
5. Built to Spill (Whelans)

Haven't really been to many gigs this year, those have been the most memorable. Probably because I waited 12+ years for four of them.

MBV - Electrik Piknikkk
The Ex - Whelans
Matmos - Andrews lane
Anni Rossi - Boom Boom Room

Bought fuck-all records this year (or last), mortgaged out of it - so I've been downloading a lot but like NGBLTH (abb.) says, most of it old, esoteric and lost in the ether down the years.

MBV and Low: ATP NY
Evangelicals: Whelan's Dublin
Beach House: ATP Minehead

I'm sure there's another one I thought was outstanding, brain not work good today.

That was the worst I've seen Deerhunter in fairness, first show with the new lineup. I still thought they were great though.

Health were a huge pile of steaming hipster shit.

Hands down worst gig of the year for me. They are a cod.
Although Health were belter in support.

Heh. I remember this debate at the time. I have to respectfully disagree I think, on both counts. HEALTH were mostly bollocks in my book. Microcastle/Weird Era Cont. is my favourite album of the year. I got the impression Deerhunter are usually better, but it was the first time I'd seen them.
Opinions, like arseholes etc.

a contender for most uncomfortable gig of the year!

what was the classic quote someone used here to describe the lead singer again?

something about sex faces, or recovering from constipation :)

maybe you just discomfort easily. I thought it was amazing.
