Mitski plays The Workman’s Club on September 20th
Dead Oceans will release Puberty 2, Mitski‘s fourth LP in as many years, on 17th June.
Ask Mitski Miyawaki about happiness and she’ll warn you: “Happiness fucks you.” It’s a lesson that’s been writ large into the New Yorker’s gritty, outsider-indie for years, but never so powerfully as on her newest album, ‘Puberty 2’. “Happiness is up, sadness is down, but one’s almost more destructive than the other,” she says. “When you realise you can’t have one without the other, it’s possible to spend periods of happiness just waiting for that other wave.” On ‘Puberty 2’, that tension is palpable: a both beautiful and brutal romantic hinterland, in which one of America’s new voices hits a brave new stride.
So that video, eh? Mitski says:
“This video is all Maegan Houang. She’s in LA and I’m in NY, so I emailed her vague ideas about what the video should be, and she turned around and came back with a completely out of the box narrative that blew us all away. So I just went, “right, I’m going to trust you on this and have you do what you want.” Sometimes the best thing to do is to step back and let people do what they’re good at.”
Which holds particularly true if they’re swinging an axe.
