Skinny Wolves bring LA’s Afro math rock tropical punk new romantics(?) Abe Vigoda to The Grand Social on November 20th, with Girls Names & No Monster Club.

Abe Vigoda (Usa, PPM / Bella Union)
The sun has dried up at ABE VIGODA’s tropical party, but they’re still packing plenty of heat in the wake of their 2008 smash, Skeletons. he sound of the much-buzzed LA foursome evolves on their new album CRUSH, adding glassy shards of cold wave pop, with synths, sequencers and broodier relentless beats that pays homage to New Order, My Bloody Valentine and The Cure.

Girls Names
Girls Names formed in Belfast in January 2009 with their first gig booked before the duo had even played together. In their short existence they’ve quickly streamlined their sound, forging their own self-styled “disposable noise pop” reminiscent of the 80s shadow world of Black Tambourine and Felt. They’ve been prolific too, honing their sound over the course of several releases, including an EP on Captured Tracks and a mini album on Tough Love. “I Lose” represents the next step in their evolution. Recorded as a three piece for the first time, the track is driven by an insistent cyclical riff, punctuated by Cathal Cully’s deceptively assured croon. Entitled “I Lose” as a response to Brilliant Colors track on the flip, the song is charged with a confidence that belies its title, Cully lifting two fingers to the past as he intones: “I don’t miss my old life”. The first of their new recordings, “I Lose” bodes well for their forthcoming debut album in early 2011.

No Monster Club
No Monster Club is the amalgamation of a symphony of one. It is a revival of dirges and waltzes unearthed from the attics of dead popstars. It is the society of noise which silently forms around the cells and atoms of a young but ageing troubadour. It is a slideshow of the grotesque and a gramophone of the absurd, which – if you are of any valour, virtue or melody – you cannot help but join.
