A Joyful Slog is a documentary looking at a certain corner of the Independent music scene in Ireland over the last twenty years featuring interviews with artists like ASIWYFA, Adebisi ShankJape, The Jimmy Cake as well as the labels, journalists and other people who nurtured this scene. It is an insight and overview of how a DIY music ethic has developed in the capital city and country as the music industry has been changing.
This documentary was born out of a production process that started in early 2011. Barry Lennon (The Richter Collective and Hands Up Who Wants To Die) and Dublin Community Television partnered with First Music Contact to apply for funding from the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland to make some television about independent music in Ireland. This project is called Community Of Independents.

The Community Of Independents project has had many different video outputs, including a gig in Whelans where each act was recorded resulting in six short artist profiles, two music industry discussion pieces presented by music journalist and blogger Aoife Barry and an on-going volunteer studio-based magazine programme presented by freelance music journalist Danny Carroll. Last but not least, is this documentary – a joyful slog in its own right.

At the launch on May 6th we will have six live performances by The Jimmy Cake, No Spill Blood, September Girls, Crayonsmith, Costello with GI &Willa Lee and Nibiru. Each set will be recorded and edited with an interview from each artist in to insightful short profile pieces. These will be shown in season two of the Community of Independents volunteer-lead studio programme which will broadcast in late May.

We better be in it.

If you can’t make it along on the night you can watch it streaming live on http://aertv.ie
