if there was nobody in my constituency I wanted to vote for, I would spoil my vote as opposed to not turning up.

thankfully in the previous elections I've voted in - 1992, 1997 and 2004, there has been a 'best of a bad lot' prize-winner.

non-voters - would you not even vote for The Greens. Even if it's just to piss off those developer pricks who think green areas are a waste of space and should be turned into more houses.

Here's a proposition for you. Read it all the way through before you decide I'm an arsehole., anywy here goes.

Democracy is dead. A significant proportion of people don't vote at all. Another significant proportion just vote lazily for Fianna Fail or Fianna Gael or whoever because they've alway voted for these pricks, or their da did, whoever they are. Only a very small proportion of floating voters actually change their vote and change governments, and that's why we've had Fianna Fail for 18 out of the last twenty years or so.

The problem with democracy is that the crank minority end up running the country. Lets shoot them all.

so ive a job tomorrow and friday,
its going door-to-door collecting data of how voters in each household are gonna vote. for a big important poll like.
so, how do i rig this that ends up somehow screwing 'Fianna Foiled again' in the rear??
any time someone goes 'fianna fail', do i just put on a sly grin and go 'thank you sir/madam' and secretely press the GREEN PARTY button or wha?
suggestions please.

Sean, do live somewhere nice?

To the right of my front door: The edges of Ranelagh, replete with oversized cars, oversized houses, people with oddly oversized heads. McDowell country.
To the left of my front door: The edges of Rathmines, replete with the remnants of the failed project to turn it into a sexy trendy suburb full of sexy trendy people. Full of overpriced flats, overpriced food, people who have loads of disposable income but no imagination on how to spend it. No mans land.

GOOD LUCK WITH THE JOB ERNESTO!

you'll hate it even more when you're through with that job and all the bullshit that goes with them offical polling jobs :) ah well its money

In a country of 4 million people with about half a dozen political parties I can't see anyone finding a party that reflects their own views exactly. I think you need to lower your expectations (unfortunately).

The most frustrating thing for me is people standing for the Dail on the basis of issues that they will have very little control over. The Gardai have 90% of the responsibility for solving crime; HSE 90% of the responsibility for health; waste, planning, housing etc are largely local authority issues.

The way i see it, there is a broad constituency of interests that have ready access to Govt through partnership and other avenues, and there is a broad consensus on most major issues (among the parties i mean, not necessarily the public). FF, FG and lab do not propose to disturb this consensus. Greens, Socialists, Indeps, SF all have radical ideas at the fringes that would enjoy only marginal support among the existing interests; in reality they would have to water them down to get into Govt.

In a nutshell, I don't see any real range of alternatives on offer. Fighting an election based on a choice of 1500, 2000 or 2200 beds hardly enthuses apathetic voters. Contrast that with the ideologically-charged French Presidential election recently.

For me, what "Ireland" seems to be crying out for is competent management of public projects and delivery of services, combined with uncomplicated ethical behaviour re personal and party finances. Personally, I'll prob vote lab/green in the hope that new coalition will not involve FF and will take a broader social, rather than purely economic, view of things.

Sorry for the long post. jane - I owe you a coke.

I totally agree. I think that Ireland is leaning towards community development lately and using that for the provision of services. Problem is the government has so much control over projects still through accountability. They tell the projects what they must do instead of letting the trained, at grassroots level community workers do their job and figure out what the people want and a compromise to suit and benefit different areas.

Its a top down system that doesnt work. The politicans get the control and they tell us what we ought to know. I found out today there is a socialist party in Ireland (I may be a bit oblivious) but there is only one member.

Did anyone see the interview on Tuburty tonight with Brendan O' Carroll? I thought his stance on politics was brilliant. About a rising tide lifts all water, not if you dont have a boat!!! Too economics based is the Irish problem you are right :)
