Where is the best place in the world to live? (1 Viewer)

I hear ye. Great place to visit with kids mind you - Hamley's, science museum, natural history museum, museum of childhood, Geffrye museum, Hackney city farm, all the parks, kid-friendly restaurants/ cafes.... but you wouldn't want to bring up a child here.

I've lived in Streatham and Shepherd's Bush.

Soon after I left Streatham this happend:

I'm pretty sure there was another drive-by shooting a few months before that one.

And a few months after we left Shepherd's Bush this happened:

My girlfriend used to live in New Cross.... where this happened:

South London - I miss it dearly.

But yeah... there are heaps of things to do there for kids. I imagine we'll be making many a visit there over the coming years. In fact, I'll be there next month!

Being a native Oregonian, I can vouch for Portland being a lovely place to live.

Pro's-
Great Beer/food
Best weed in the world, Holland is for pussies.
Amazing scenery
Forests/lakes/beaches all on your doorstep
The summers
Gigs
Bike racks on buses

Con's-

The winters
No one there is actually from there anymore
Loads of Rednecks everywhere except the city centre
Can be quite clickish. I went to gigs for years and never really met anyone.

Oregon has amazing scenery and some beautiful towns, but it is the sticks. (or the boon docks as we used to say) There are some truly backwards (backwoods) people running amok. Stick to Portland, Eugene, Ashland, Bend, Hood River and a few of the towns on the coast.

Take all of this with a grain of salt though, I moved to Ireland for a woman. I live in Finglas and I love it.

These 2 incidents happened about 5 minutes from my house within 2 months:

And Stoke Newington is relatively affluent with good schools, supposedly a good place for kids.... would hate to be a teenager in London right now.

If I ever moved to "the country", as us Dubs call it, I'd move near Porthmadog in Wales. Small town with a decent record shop, nice pubs/ restaurants and it's right beside Portmeirion, the architectural oddity where The Prisoner was shot. And it's also "the gateway to Snowdonia National Park" apparently. No live music venues of note, but the likes of Gorky's and SFA have played in the rugby club :)

I'm happily residing between level seven and level eight at the moment..it's working out quite well.

There's a Portland in Dorset too - it's where Hardy sets 'The Well-beloved'. Muckross House was made from portland stone. Ok, now I'm out of facts.

No takers on Dorset then? It seems to be competing with Cormac's Swords for the wooden spoon in this thread.

That's it buddy. You're getting carjacked the next time you visit the Pavillions.

I'd like to live in France, Germany or a predominantly Spanish-speaking part of the US for 6 months or more to learn the respective languages. I can speak quite a bit of Francais, a few words of German and cartoon Spanish.

I'm thinking of brow-beating the missus into a move south.

Dunedin
Christchurch
Wellington
Auckland
Perth
Sydney
Adelaide
Melbourne

...one of those would do.

im living in wellington at the moment - i reckon you should just come to new zealand and do all the tourist stuff then live somewhere else (but maybe summer will be better and i havent been to south island yet which is the best according to all reports. still, i reckon a visit would be enough...).

its the pubs. dear god the pubs are dreadful

My wife's friend located to New Zealand - Christchurch and now Wellington. According to her, it's hard to make friends; people dress like they're from the 1970s; the pay is crap; and healthcare/other benefits are crap (she's 6 months pregnant). On the other hand she still prefers it to ireland.
