Astro - sounds.....looks interesting

that's a wonderfully peculiar album. 101 strings were an easy listening / lounge / bachelor pad / big band / exotica orchestral organisation. they had done many albums of a variety of sorts of standard easy listening fare, then decided to do an album in the psychedelic sci-fi feel that in vouge at the time, 1969. it turned out to be extremely strange, evoking the anxiety of an unexpectedly strong dose of LSD. the first track, "flameout", is incredible : has to be heard to be believed. i have used it to great effect during dj sets. also, the whole album has been plundered for samples by many electronic musicians over the last 20 years or so.

master musicians of jajouka - pipes of pan at jajouka

is that the brian jones one? a travesty that one, he fucked it up totally by putting tacky flanger effects all over it. as if the original music isn't "psychedelic" enough.

the only one you need is "apocalypse across the sky". dont let the fact that its produced by the mediocre bill laswell put you off, he doesn't fuck around with the original music.

talvin singh, on the other hand, completely fucked around - and fucked up - jajouka music on the abysmal descrecration he produced, buyer beware.

Brian
There is a letter in this month's Record Collector about a guy who bought Nurse With Wound's - A Chance Meeting... LP in a church jumble sale.
He bought it out of curiosity and was shocked by the sleeve and found the music unlistenable.

He wrote in wondering how much it was worth.
£110 quoted - unless it's a bootleg (of which there are a few)

lee ranaldo also did some recordings in the kif of him sitting in with the jajouka. pretty raw.

Awesome Color - Electric Aborigines. I'm liking this a lot. Can't find it on record though. Anyone (Gary?) know if it's going to get the vinyl treatment?
