The Pope's chief astronomer says that life on Mars cannot be ruled out.

Writing in the Vatican newspaper, the astronomer, Father Gabriel Funes, said intelligent beings created by God could exist in outer space.

Father Funes, director of the Vatican Observatory near Rome, is a respected scientist who collaborates with universities around the world.

The search for forms of extraterrestrial life, he says, does not contradict belief in God.

The official Vatican newspaper headlines his article 'Aliens Are My Brother'.

Well, I think this is interesting. Carl Sagan talked about how whenever new discoveries are made religious bodies dont go "Fantastic, the universe is even bigger and more miraculous thanks to God/Allah/Flying Spaghetti Monster" and instead say "No, my God is a small God and a small God they shall stay. The universe is wrong".

On an aside, any sci-fi fans ever read A Case of Conscience? A Jesuit is on a space trip that discovers a new, intelligent race and he has to determine if they have souls and if they have souls are the damned or are they one of God's creations? It is a great read.
