Honestly If I'm not coming back here in 4 months to say I'm still playing this and haven't bought a single game since, I'll gladly buy several pints for my future self as an apology for this embarrassment:

UFO50.

A greatest hits compilation of 50 Games from an imaginary 1980s games developer, ( IRL, made by 4 developers with a history of very original takes on modern game mechanics for games that could have been made for the Sinclair Spectrum.

There's arcade games, but there's also a 9-15 hour RPG. Also there's sequels. And a meta narrative. And achievements in 1 game will unlock mechanics in other games.

That's a beautiful concept, though it's funny the familiar 8-bit sounds really make me hanker for some of the originals. I was amazed lately that my nephews were into playing some souped up version of Space Invaders at minicade at the cinema. I didn't think that old school stuff would appeal to people who grew up with approaching photoreal game visuals.

This game is fantastic. Myself and Mrs. Pissypants have put in about 8 hours since I got it - played only 3 different games so far, and not remotely close to completing any of them. It's been immense fun.

As someone who played games all through the era referenced in this game, it *very* much captures the spirit of gaming in that time. Don't get me wrong - these are mostly very much modern games. But the experience of committing to a title because you bought it, stumbling upon different game mechanics when you kind of have no idea what you're supposed to be doing, and *finding the fun* in genres you'd never usually play (we've become obsessed by one, "Party House", that is essentially a card game) is soooo fucking spot on. Not knowing what game you're going to stumble on next (because a friend game you a tape), playing a game regardless of genre, the slow discovery of what it is you're meant to be doing: it's all there. Such amazing attention to the detail of the experience throughout. Quite an achievement, but then the 6 devs who made games for this have a good track record. People will be discovering these games for years to come. Unless I'm unaware of currently being high on carbon monoxide fumes, this will likely be by GOTY.

89 hours of gameplay in. Myself and Mrs. Pants still playing the shit out of this and have played only about 25 of the 50 games. We've finished 4 of them, and have every intention of finishing all but 2 or maybe 3 of the games we've played so far that don't appeal to us.

The music is great too... 7/8 time signature in an 8-bit puzzle game? Why not!...
