The WTF Thread (9 Viewers)

Well it worked for me anyway. Got to hear some seriously satisfying crunches in the process.
caveat emptor:
Quite a few years ago a wonderful musician named Robbie Basho died as
a result of a chiropractic neck adjustment: He was known to have a
condition that made the vessels in his neck fragile. Later,
chiropractors said there are routine tests one can do to detect this
condition, before trying neck adjustments. However, his chiropractor
did not do the test, and had adjusted Robbie's neck numerous times
previously. ``This'' time Robbie went unconscious after the
adjustment -- which he had done before. However, he never woke up.
Hospital exams revealed a blood vessel in his neck had been
torn/broken.

Robbie's chiropractor did what I call the ``intentional whiplash''
type neck adjustment - twisting the neck violently with the hands.

Isn't it all a bit of a grey area when it comes to whether it's actually of any use or not?
Not at all, grey implies that here is some evidence to support it. The evidence is pretty much against chiropractic therapy. At its core, it is a spiritual belief that all human illness is related to the back and can be fixed by realigning the spine. This allows the universal order of the universe to be efficiently channelled by the nervous system and bring balance to the body (or something similar). They dress it up now as a pseudomedical profession with certificates (that aren't generally awarded by universities or medical schools but I'm sure there are some "official" chiropractor schools out there.

Oh and like all good clinicians, they don't let pesky things like research and facts influence them. In fact, their associations will sue people for defamation if they mention things like lack of evidence, risks of tissue/spine damage, etc.
