Terry Edwards plays the intimate Lazybird Club in The International Bar, Wicklow Street on Sunday 27th November. This is probably the smallest stage that Terry has performed on in Dublin, but one that enjoys international recognition and respect. Recent trips to Dublin have brought Terry to The Point with Madness and The Voodoo Lounge with Lydia Lunch.

It was at The Voodoo Lounge where Terry gave the audience an appetitiser of his full solo performance – saxophone, pocket trumpet (and some equally diminutive instruments) beautifully and innovatively played over pre-recorded sound-scapes. He plays both his own compositions and ‘old time favourites’ from The Jesus And Mary Chain’s ‘Never Understand’ to Miles Davis’ ‘Seven Steps To Heaven’. Terry likes “taking the intrinsic things out of something and seeing what’s left”. He experiments with the bones of what’s there, strip backs the layers and plays with the pieces. He describes this process in terms of a photograph, “…look at it as a negative instead of a positive photograph” or switching the colours of the image around.

Terry can take this kind of performance anywhere from the 800 seat Queen Elizabeth Hall in London to intimate places such as Moles in Bath or Lazybird in Dublin.

Terry is a prolific musician and the eclecticism and versatility of his own music is also reflected in the artists and groups he has worked with. From leftfield artists such as Lydia Lunch, Tindersticks, Gallon Drunk, Spiritualised to mainstream ones such as Madness, David Gray and many, many artists in between.

Born and raised in Essex, England, he learned how to play the trumpet and piano in school, before taking up the guitar at the age of thirteen. He received a saxophone for his 18th birthday prior to entering college to study music and “get into a band”. Terry succeeded in college to join a band and left with a degree too. From the early 1980’s he played with The Higsons and in 1987 he formed BUtterfield 8 with ‘Young’ Mark Bedford. Having played in and with many bands, Terry’s first solo release was in 1991 on the STIM label. Since the early 1990’s, Terry’s has been involved in hundreds of releases and thousands of live shows as both a session player and live performer (with and without his band The Scapegoats), not to mention dozens of John Peel sessions. Terry also runs the Sartorial Record label.

Musically, his top three saxophonist influences are Davey Payne, the guitarist with Ian Dury And The Blockheads, the rhythm and blues player Earl Bostic, who was possibly the greatest saxophone improviser, and the avant garde American saxophonist and composer John Zorn.

For further information, see www.terryedwards.co.uk. Tickets are €10. Advance sales can be made from City Discs, Road, Sound Cellar and www.tickets.ie. This is a unique opportunity to see Terry in such a small venue - make sure that you don’t miss this!

The stuff he played with Lydia Lunch was good... I'd go to this!
Is he going to be able to do his "sax feedback" trick in such a small venue?

if it is the same sax feedback trick that John Butcher does, then yes.

Cheers to everyone who came to this: a great turnout for a great performance. Thanks a million to Terry Edwards for popping over from the UK, and to John of Push Promotions for helping arrange the gig and for DJing a first-class selection of '80s tunes on the night.

Next week: Schroedersound returns, and we have the Dublin debut of Selah, a solo project from Hornby of We Are Knives. Johnny McMahon of Rollers/Sparkers fame will also be DJing.

Boigaz did the radio show yesterday. Hopefully his playlist will be showing up...

Thanks,
Paul
