Steafán Hanvey & The Honeymoon Junkies is the impressive debut album from singer/songwriter Steafán Hanvey. Steafán and the band played to a packed Radio City audience on Feb 1 at the album launch. The album was released on Friday 3rd February.
Steafán Hanvey, like Ash & Relish before him, hails from Downpatrick, Co. Down, in Northern Ireland. Steafán hasn’t taken the predictable route of spending 10 years in Belfast building a name, hoping to “spill-over into the south like many of his contemporaries. Instead, in truly unorthodox fashion, he arrived in Dublin via Seattle, and Helsinki where he spent several years honing his craft away from the watchful eye of the Irish music Industry. He relocated to Dublin in 2002 and started work on his debut album.
Steafán drafted in the help of (ex-band members of 50/50, a outfit Steafán fronted in the late 80s/early 90s) Ken and Carl Papenfus, from Relish, on drums and guitar and various members of the Van Morrison band to play on his album. “Steafán Hanvey and The Honeymoon Junkies was for the most part, written in Helsinki, which may account for it’s (excluding Steafán’s accent) “un-Irish sound. Mainly influenced by the darkness (not the band!) and the striking contrast between the seasons, lost love, snow and music of all genres, the album was recorded in Dublin, Helsinki, Newry and mastered in London. After going back to Finland to add strings, Steafán returned to have Kieran Lynch (U2 - How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, and Elvis Costello - When You Were Cruel) mix the record.
Upon completion, Steafán returned to his old stomping ground of Helsinki, Finland, in
2005, where he promoted the release of his debut album. Having spent several years up
in the Nordic hinterland (1995-2002), it was only fitting to give his new material its
first outing there. Finland’s equivalent to NME- gave Steafán
Hanvey and The Honeymoon Junkies 4/5****
When living in Helsinki, Steafán often travelled back to Ireland to support bands like the Four of Us and Relish. Since moving back to Ireland, Steafán has played support to John Spillane, Mary Coughlan, Damien Dempsey, Hugh Cornwall (The Stanglers) The Walls, actor and blues legend Don Baker, The Devlins, Eleanor McEvoy and The HotHouse Flowers and in May 05, was invited along on a whistle-stop tour of Ireland with Liam O’Maonlai on 7 dates of Liam’s Irish tour.
Not only is Steafán, and his music, respected by veteran Irish musicians, he has also been recognised in the U.S and was invited to play at Boston’s NEMO Music Festival last year. He was one of 2 successful Irish songwriters invited to play and to represent what was happening in the Irish music scene. ?lt;/font>
Recent news just in, is that Northern Ireland’s own world famous Avalon guitar manufacturers have offered Steafán an artist endorsement deal. He will soon be playing an Avalon guitar.?lt;/font>
His debut lead single, “Hundred Days of Snow?has made many of the radio play lists around the country, picking up plays from 2FM, RTE1, BBC Radio Ulster and was play listed on Northern Ireland’s newest U105, Dublin’s Q102 and Dublin’s FM 104. It has also been picked up by many of the regional stations too.?lt;/font>
Steafán has just wound up the first leg of the Honeymoon Tour </B>which saw him perform at Auntie Annies/Belfast, Sandino’s / Derry, The Roisin Dubh/Galway and Whelan’s/Dublin.
The second single from the album will be released on April 6 and is entitled “MY WOMAN (Ode to You). (B-side “Everyone’s Happy"
Steafán will play Bewley’s Cafe Theatre in Dublin on April 20.

What the critics have been saying:
“Steafan Hanvey's debut is a rare delight.
It deals in sparkling, feel-good, melodies. Lyrically, Hanvey travels to some dark places, yet his song craft is shot through a wide-eyed optimism. Hanvey's LP is of Impressive quality."
Hotpress: 7/10
Of a 'Hundred Days of Snow', “an uplifting swirl of dissonance and sunshine. On radio, it sounds infectiously sweet."
Hotpress
“His voice oozes warmth and a confessional charm?A lean, longing collection. The Irish Times

When Hanvey is good-as on the biting "Look at You" and the trio of beautifully
crafted pop songs that open the album, he's very, very good.
Dublin’s Evening Herald

“What is it about the water in Downpatrick? Steafán is making noises in the right places, but he has earned his place at the table. A fresh, mature, and eloquent debut.
Desperation is one hell of a song!
Gerry Anderson/BBC Radio Ulster.

“Delivered in a fresh and soulful way. The whole album is really bloody good!

The Derry Playhouse/May 05:
The beautiful clarity of his voice was bewitching..
Steafán Hanvey's melting melodies, sung so tenderly, touched the audience.
Daily Ireland.
Of Steafán’s mini-album “Sole?
“It always comes as a pleasant surprise when a CD arrives with no advance fanfare and turns out to be a cracker?
