Somadrone is Irish Composer / Musician / Filmaker Neil O Connor. Neil has studied with Roger Doyle, Jurgen Simpson and completed his PhD in Composition (specializing in graphical notation) with Donnacha Dennehy at Trinity College Dublin in 2009. Beginning his career as a filmmaker, Neil has been involved in a diverse range of musical activities including folk, jazz, rock, electronic and electro-acoustic music. His work was been shown/performed at the Dublin Electronic Arts Festival, Fringe Festival, Resonances Festival @ IRCAM Paris, 60 X 60 NYC and is involved with the YCC (Young Composers Committee). Incepted in 1995, Somadrone began as a project to document some home recordings on 4-track recorders. This was released in 1999 as a 10” e.p limited to 100 copies. The latter years involved playing, recording and touring in Europe and America with Irish Acts: Redneck Manifesto, Connect Four Orchestra, Goodtime John, David Kitt, Si Schroeder and Jape. Instruments such as Vibraphone, Harp, Theremin, Indian Drone Machines and Moog synthesizers feature on 2005’s “Fuzzing Away To A Whisper” released Sept 05 on Trust Me I’m a Thief records. These collections of recordings are 2 CDS from six years of producing. They range from electro-acoustic pieces to pop music and incorporate elements of early Kraftwerk, Broadcast, Brian Eno and Steve Reich. While pursuing a PhD in Music, and finishing work in the US with New York’s Bang On a Can Ensemble, Somadrone’s third album (2007) “Of Pattern and Purpose” was assembled. The first to incorporate vocal accompaniment, it is composed mostly of miniature symphonies and electronic interludes. Recent projects include a featuring on Wire Magazine’s Wire Tapper CD and a residency at the Institute of Electro-Acoustic Music, Stockholm.

Spektrumtheatresnakes - Album released 23 November 2009 on Twisted Nerve Records

A self-described “psychedelic power trio specializing in zone-out progressive pop musik,” TWINKRANES dare to be different. Spektrumtheatresnakes, their debut album, is triple-pronged, hammer-action psychedelia driven by tribal motorik, barking mad synthesiser lines, loose connections, dead ends and choppy stormy waters. If you like Silver Apples, Wooden Shjips, car chases, krautrock and mind-bending grooves, you’re going to love this.

Hailing from Dublin, the trio comprises Anto, aka Blonde Fox (Vocals & drums), Rooster (guitars & tape manipulation) and Ray, aka Auburn Spinner (Korg synthesizer rhythms and soundscapes). Together, they take influence equally from dance music and the weirder wings of pop history. “We love krautrock and prog but beyond the classics we think there’s a lot of great music that would have been better if it had been processed in a pop way. That’s what we’re doing. The album as a whole is really us exploring the psychedelic world like a baby snake opening its eyes for the first time and checking what’s around.”

Recorded over three days in November 2008 at London’s Press Play Studios (owned by Stereolab’s drummer and used frequently by the band) the album was co-produced by Rick Tomlinson, aka Voice Of The Seven Woods, and engineered by Jimmy Robertson (Florence & The Machine, Last Shadow Puppets). “It’s the first electronic production that Rick has worked on,” says Anto. “He gave it a great authentic sound harking back to those seminal ‘7os Krautrock records – ‘very dry but driving. He’s also very good with Drums.”

The trio formed around three years ago and have to date released two killer 7” singles: Plateau and Being Kong. Welcomed into Andy Votel’s B-Music collective, Twinkranes joined the Migrating-Caustic-Mutable tour of the UK and Europe in the summer of 2008. Highlights of their career so far include performances at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound, Ireland’s Electric Picnic and Belfast’s Oscillation festival plus a track (Being Kong) featured in the latest Rupert Grint movie Cherrybomb. “All the Harry Potter heads are well into it,” say the band. “They’ve been passing the track round online like an opium pipe… they’re all space rockers at heart really.”

Honed from their expansive live performance’s, Spektrumtheatresnakes and its seven deadly tracks stand as a cold blooded testament to coded psychedelia, krautrock, prog-rock and burning avant skab pop.

Spektrumtheatresnakes is released this November on Manchester’s Twisted Nerve Records.

“Incredible NME 9/10”

“An explosive launch for Dublin’s space rock programme 4 stars Record Collector”

“Album of the week Rough Trade Records”

“A singular, courage’s trip into rhythm, sounding at once organic and other worldly Clash Magazine 8/10”

“Twinkranes have created an absolute juggernaut of an album super sweet magazine”
