But can you give me an example of something like a court ruling where this happens or is it all just hearsay and people you know excusing this behaviour or does it actually happen where it matters?
Yes it does. Contrary to what you might think there is something of an anti-middle class bias in the courts where 'extenuating circumstances' lead to concurrent sentences, suspended sentences and 'time served' and suchlike.
