Re: Queen Kong Berlin Hassle.

berlin clip,interview.

Saoirse Ni nGaolgnaigh Emailed in this interview:

Queen Kong's first Berlin gig descended into chaos when the plug was pulled when guitarist David Murphy took off his top and refused to put it back on.
The morning after their electrifying headline slot,I met up with him in Kreuzberg for a croissant to discuss the events. Here is his account:

" Every festival has its "brown acid" moment and for this one it was the flyer distributed the previous night declaring that "macho behaviour" would not be tolerated.
Obviously the organisers considered a Marshall half stack to be "macho" as the one they provided produced a decidedly neutered guitar sound for every band that played through it.
When it came our turn to play,we were all lathered up and ready to go nuts, but when I switched on the aforementioned Marshall...nothing. It had finally given up the ghost and died.Fortunately this didn't happen during the gig,and we were able to put off our performance for an hour while we tried to find a replacement.
Thankfully Tom came to the rescue with his Vox practise amp, and the gig was saved,at least temporarily.
Finally we could begin our gig,and we all came out swinging. At the end of our first song I broke my guitar strap from swinging overhead too much and had to ducttape it back together.
A couple of songs later I was completely drenched with sweat so I took off my tshirt to cool down, not a regular occurance at our gigs, but not unheard of either.
After this I was told to put my top on as it was making some people uncomfortable.
I appealed to the crowd and asked if it was ok if I left my top off for comfort reasons. After the resounding "yes", we played another couple of songs, then a bra was thrown to my and I was told to wear it.Thinking it was a joke, I went back to the mike, held up the bra and said "Where's the Lighter".This got some "OOOHs",but then the same person said they were serious,I had to wear it..
Again,I ignored this ludicrous request and continued playing.
when we got to our penultimate song,a cover of GG Allins "Don't Talk To Me",the same person asked to speak to me.
I told her she could speak in to the mike,as we have no secrets between us and our friends .They said they didn't want to speak in to the mike, but I persisted, saying "Ah you do" mrs. doyle style.
Then the crimson mist descended, they screamed"don't tell me what to do,this show is over!".
They rushed the mixer, and turned the sound off.
This was followed by about 20 minutes of 20 minutes of speeches ,calling for us to resume.
Meanwhile, backstage we were informed that a man with his top off playing rock music waas an unacceptable rock n roll cliche.
I responded by saying that the the fridge full of beer supplied for the bands ,while the "little people " out front have to pay for theirs was the biggest cliche in the whole book.
I then took as much beer from the fridge as I could carry, went to the front of the stage and repeated our arguement about cliches, then told the audience I was giving away our rider as I considered it macho.
Eventually we were allowed resume to play our final song, but when I did I found a girl ,Alia(don't know the spelling) strumming my guitar.
there was just enough time to teach her the chords to our last song and she played the whole thing instead.
If thats not the spirit of Ladyfest, then I don't know what is.It's certainly not some crusade against "macho behaviour" whatever that is."
Queen Kong are back in Dublin now and intend to release their next single "So Brand New" on vinyl in the Autumn.

Maith an chailin,a Shaoirse!

wow - that actually is the most retarded thing i have ever read
hate dah!

Re: Queen Kong Berlin Hassle.

the interview sounds like a downer, but there were tonnes of cool people there, and a really cool atmosphere.I just think we fell foul of the school bully, thats all.

Re: Queen Kong Berlin Hassle.

did the person go schizo because you still
refused to wear a shirt, or because you
were playing a GG Allin song? pretty cool
if GG sent them over the edge!

Re: Queen Kong Berlin Hassle.

both,really.
she thought "dont talk to me " was directed at her.
afterwards, her cronies kept trying to justify her by saying"its not my personal opinion...but.....we have to represent all possible opinions".
So basically they were only enacting the will of one person they were afraid of.i was warned not to approach her afterwards, she was so pumped, she looked like henry rollins or something.
5 people put the lights out for the other 195 that were there.
I should point out that this behaviour wasnt a lesbian or feminist thing, and definitely not a "german"(you know what i mean) thing, as we spoke to plenty of the above afterwards ,who were opposed to what happened and spoke out loudly about it.
they consider themselves radicals, but i'd call them Ultras.

Re: Queen Kong Berlin Hassle.

nobody batted an eyelid when we did a mini-set of acoustic covers of skrewdriver tunes.
shows to go!

Re: Magical Girl Gig Sat 18th Aug - Das Wanderlust+Estel+Sweet Jane

In case anyone is worried about male tits being shown at this feminist gig we have a bra ready for bushie and queen kong are all banned.
and no-one called dave is allowed in.

.|..|.|..|

actually i get why the woman at ladyfest berlin asked dave to put his top on - but i think she was wrong because he's a sweaty bastard (like bushie) and he's always getting his top off.
but the woman at ladyfest berlin was obviously pissed off because so many spaces whether the lads realise it or not are male spaces.
most lads are socialised to be louder, more active, encouraged more to be dominant and in control.
so when it comes to gigs lads nearly always stand at the front and take up alot of space and look next time youre at a gig- women hardly ever push themselves forward to the front because we are brought up to think we shouldnt take up much space.
instead of people getting pissed off with me saying this - think about whether its true first and then imagine being born a female and having to cope with this.
we should push to the front more its true- but sometimes it would just be cool if we didnt have to push for what we'd like and it would just happen.
this is why bikini kill always asked to boys to stand at the back of their gigs and asked the girls to stand at the front.

what women want sometimes is to feel 'for once this space/stage/gig' is celebrating women and being female which is what started the riot grrrl/ladyfest movements 10 years ago.

for an extreme feminist seeing a bloke taking his top off on a stage which is supposed to be 'for once' female at a music festival which is 'for once' celebrating women 100% instead of the 10% usually seen at most music festivals.

seeing all 6ft 2" of dave (and thats just his shoulder width) taking off his shirt would have pissed her off and im thinking she threw him the bra to show that women are always expected to cover up themselves whether they're sweating buckets or not - and if they do take their tops off its either sexualised (since thats how female brests are only to be seen)and it gets so much publicity (beth ditto, bikini kill, the slits, bratmobile)

overall though- i think she was wrong - dave always gets his gear off during a gig- but so does amy.. and queen kong are so out there they dont have any agenda- nevermind a macho one..daves is not a macho macho man..(he's lovely) but the woman at ladyfest berlin didnt know this.

i heard dave on phantom this morning when i was driving to work and was happy to hear him praising ladyfests and what theyre doing and he explained that this women was in the extreme- she was - but i see how her mind was working.

ANYWAYS...
this gig on saturday is going to be very sweaty - with lots of girls and lots of boys enjoying a space which is trying to support women in alternative music.
!baggyyyy.|..|.|..|.|..|.|..|.|..|.|..|

Re: Magical Girl Gig Sat 18th Aug - Das Wanderlust+Estel+Sweet Jane

Well I'll be at this and retaining clothes simply as any thing else would be an offence to aesthetic sensibilities! (i.e. horrific to behold!) - I do get the point above though

Meantime Das Wander Lust have released single of the year (bar none!) in Orange shop - if ya don't believe me hit the my space and click on Orange Shop

Simply put this gig will rock - get there early and all
