This ended up:

focusrite saffire pro 40 -> macbook -> reaper - audacity - garageband*

*i just have a lot of old demo's in there.

will be upgrading to mac pro and pc at a later date.

I'm going to be home building the rack mount units for all this shtuff. if theres any interest i can post the plans and the methods up here.
