The other night my mate was searched on the spot by a police officer who thought he was carrying drugs(he wasnt by the way)

So anyway basically we were wondering is it legal for police to search you on the spot?

I'm pretty sure it's legal for them to beat the shit out of you for "lookin' funny" so the answer is probably yes.

Yes it is. If they have suspicions about you they are fully within their rights to stop and search you.

When stopped on the street by the gardai

* Ask why you have been stopped
* At the end of the search ask for a record of the search
* Ask to see their warrant card, if they are not in uniform.
* If you resist a search you run the risk of criminal charges and or physical injury.
