phase?.. (2 Viewers)

In the ideal world maybe...but surely the backing track is being obscured in the first take by the singer standing in front of the mic, so when you try to cancel it out with the reverse phase, its not perfect cancellation.
No, it aint perfect. Nothing is. You could try having the singer (or a cardboard cutout!) stand in the same position so the mic response would be similar.

I'm sure it would be OK, if the backing track was the final arrangement, as the leftover would get lost in the mix, but if not, it might be noticable, no?

You have to do the phase cancellation there and then (solo both tracks and render the file offline). There is very little left in the vocal track if it's done properly.

It does work quite well. The narrower the polar pattern the better.

Tried the record the room and flip thing recently.
It does work to a certain extent alright.

Must try the out of phase speakers thing.

Another good one I've heard is.. uh, kinda hard to explain.
So I drew this retarded picture :

So. You've got a big yellowish circle.
This represents the singer.
(insert singer joke here)

You've got two identical mics -
One aimed at the gob, another shooting above the noggin.
Get them aligned as closely as possible.

Flip phase on the top one -
The thinking is that pretty much the only thing the bottom mic is getting that the top mic isn't ... is the vocals.

wait, sorry man, can you explain that one again please. im confused as to why you just wouldnt record with one mic. are you talking about being in a vocal booth or control room or what?

Yeah, it's another way of recording while listening to speakers and trying to cancel the bleed.
Same as the 'bono' method and others that were discussed on the previous page.

Btw, this means you need to move those mics until the suckers are in phase without flipping.
What way do you have 'em set up?
jayzus. really? why exactly though if they sound better when one of them is flipped. the overheads were about 3 foot over the kit and one was left of kit and one was right of kit. parralel and centred/even as much as i could.

You know, theoretically you can use convoloution to remove room sounds from a vocal. Don't think anyones written an algortihm yet though.
If you set up your mic in the studio then created an impulse. Then use yet-to-be-created inverse-convoloution to remove the tail from the vocals instead of applying it. then something something

ooh....tuna sandwich...
