Is there any obvious way of telling if your passport is machine readable or not?

Oh I see. You know that bit has your date of birth in it - just if anyone is ever faking i.d., you have to change that bit too.

My passport is in ribbons. Tis very creased and the sides are coming apart.

At what stage would it be not accepted by the check in people at the airport?

I got my passport back with my visa the other day...very exciting I know. I am just waiting for me to lose it or to happen to walking past a raging fire and accidentally drop it in. I don't have a good history with passports, they are made to come to grief
