In case anyone is interested... Here's a show what I co-wrote. Opened last night. We think it's quite good...

Oedipus Loves You

The artists of Pan Pan Theatre are applying their unique interpretive talents to one of the Western world’s most powerful myths. A dynamic group of all-round performers will explore the influence of Œdipus and his surrounding myths on the modern mind. Director Gavin Quinn uses music and multimedia, comedy and drama to tease out the ideas that continue to have the tightest hold on us today. In keeping with Pan Pan’s stated aim to explore the boundaries of theatre and performance, this production will feature live music in a setting that will give you more to look at, listen to and think about than you would believe could be packed into the Smock Alley theatre. A dynamic group of all-round performers will explore some of the questions Sophocles posed two and a half thousand years ago, that are still confounding us today. What is a hero? What does a plague signify? Who are these people we call our family? How much do we really want to know about our relationships? And they will be doing it with a rock band.

Yeah - cool stuff.

I love that line in Mighty Aphrodite by Woody Allen, along the lines of 'Oedipus - you should what they call him in harlem*'.

* = a motherfucker.

Ah yes!

Or as somebody else (maybe Steven Wright or Eddie Izzard) said;
"Oedipus - some guy that was in love with his cat.."

The blurb is kind of unrepresentative - it's kind of a horrible car crash between Oedipus Rex, suburban ennui, bad barbecues and rock'n'roll. A lot of fun.

The fictional band in the show - Gordon Is A Mime - music by the redoubtable Jimmy Eadie - got accepted into the HWCH fest - but they couldn't do the gig 'cos of the show... Check out their myspace:-

I suppose the moral of the Oedipus story is: don't murder some guy on the road for nothing, because maybe he's your father. also, give careful thought before having relations with a woman twice your age - afterall, she could be your mother. and finally, don't stab out your eyes - because gross.

<plug>"Densely inter-textual, wickedly funny and wonderfully theatrical in the most post-modern of ways," according to the Irish Times.</plug>
