new stars of the lid 3lp on the way (1 Viewer)

...that's off the top of my head. i'll have to check the drone section for more when i get home

...and there's more:

ultrasound loom/analogic - most sotl-like of them all. mainly solo outlet for rf ovetz, an original (music for nitrous oxide-era) member of sotl. great double lp, still available from ba-da-bing, a cdr (yerida) probably o.o.p. and a split lp w/drona parva

surface of the earth - gritty amp hum from nz trio, one of whom is now k-group. cds on hermescorp

scott solter - one river (tell all recs). tiny telephone/prarie sun engineer's solo outlet. beware his other cds.

elektro nova/electro nova - double cd from norwegian (?) guy on smalltown supersound

hafler trio - 3 cds released between nexsound/die stadt, available from diestadt.de

ora - mothership for tate, chalk, potter, northam, even lol coxhill at one stage...

alan lamb - 2 cds on dorobo of the sounds of vibrating telephone wires

other names: mnortham, jonathan coleclough, (some) aidan baker, darren tate/monos, keith berry

drones, my favourite sounds in the world: excellent!

aside from sotl, mirror and andrew chalk, other essential drone albums are:

nurse with wound: soliloquy for lilith (an obvious choice, but this is really the king of drone albums, it is in a class totally of its own though, only really rivalled by...)

coil: time machines (fucking incredible, totally mind altering in itself. the sound is directly psychoactive)

john duncan: phantom broadcast (truely one of the most gloriously beautiful things i have ever heard, its like the audio equivalent of sunlight being reflected off the sea. totally euphoric, utterly immersive. apparently it was
created from one shortwave radio frequency, but the amount of things one hears unfolding from it is awe-inspiring and continually refreshing: i hear
angelic choirs, bells tolling, shuddering voices. amazing.)

the hafler trio: how to slice a loaf of bread (sadly unavailable, this set contains hours of very intense and immersive drones which completely take over any environment they are played in. colin potter's wonderful remix of this - "a pressed on sandwich" - is more obtainable, accessable and affordable)

cosey fanni tutti: selflessness (one of the coldest, most glacial sounding things i have ever heard: has all the clarity and stark beauty of winter light.)

ora: aureum (an incredibly organic sounding [mostly culled from natural field recordings] collection of soft sound scapes. beautiful, quietly intense and moving.)

monos: generators (slightly more electronic, but incredibly warm sounding slices of gorgeousness. the real highlight is disc two - "the black sea" - which is immensely powerful with an enormous amount of sonic depth)

elaine radique: biogenesis (constructed from recordings of her baby's heartbeat from within her womb, this is a surprisingly funky work of amniotic ambience)

merzbow and christoph heemann (sounding nothing like merzbow, thankfully, this is certainly the best thing heemann has done outside of mirror, and is both remarkably soothing and haunting)

darren tate and andrew liles: without season (slowly undulating accordions, the sounds of a stream and bird song fuse together in a beautiful warm haze)

jonathan coleclough: cake (a headfuck to listen to in an outdoor environment, builds very slowly into an amazingly intense climax. utterly fantastic)

mnortham: a great and riverless ocean (remarkably subtle, moving and very very beautiful)

steven stapleton and david tibet: the sadness of things (mainly for the second piece - "the grave and beautiful name of sadness" - though the title track is also wonderful, deeply melancholic spaciousness)

organum: vacant lights (like the eye of a storm, this is a subdued, meditative piece performed amoungst the sounds of traffic)

phill niblock: works for hurdy-gurdy and voice (immense sounding chasms of sound which reach an almost-spiritual intensity)

aube reworks maurizio bianchi: volume one (absolutely amazing, and apparently based around piano as source material, this is a beautifully hypnotic and hallucinatory work)

Yeah, it's top notch stuff. Try to get "21:30 for acoustic guitar" if you can. Brilliant droney ambience. Also track 5 on Multiples is absolutely gorgeous.

Adam Wiltzie from SOTL was doing sound for Crayonsmith for 2 weeks on the UK tour with Sparklehorse.

dear mail order customer,

we have had an incredibly difficult time getting the vinyl LP version
of the new Stars of the Lid album completed. from the month it took
to get the jackets printed, to having to get the inner sleeves
printed twice, to the five week wait at the pressing plant, every
step has featured mistakes and delays. we have never had such a hard
time with production of a vinyl release. i would have written sooner
this week, but i was waiting for our pressing plant to give us a
definitive date on when the vinyl would ship to us. that day is
monday april 2nd, and the albums should be arriving in our warehouse
next friday april 6th. we will be spending the entire weekend packing
up all of the pre-orders and we expect all of them to be in the mail
on monday the 9th.

i am sincerely sorry for the delay. you can be assured that you will
be receiving your copy before they are available in stores. thank you
for your patience and understanding.

sincerely,

mr. kranky

Fella in Tower told me that they hadnt gotten it in yet and that numerous people had already asked this weekend (released on Fridayi think).he said he had no idea how popular they were until this weekend....
