Nick Cave: The Videos (10 bucks at the moment)
This is deadly.

For anyone interested, BBC Four have been showing a few of these this week.
My favourite one, Soul of a Man, is on tomorrow night:

[font=Arial, helvetica, sans-serif]Soul of a Man

Director Wim Wenders, whose work includes Buena Vista Social Club, Wings of Desire and Paris, Texas, explores the lives of his favourite blues artists: Skip James, Blind Willie Johnson, and J B Lenoir.

The film tells the story of these artists' lives in music through a fictional scenario and rare archive footage.

There are also covers of their songs by contemporary musicians, including Bonnie Raitt, Lucinda Williams, Lou Reed, Eagle Eye Cherry, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Cassandra Wilson, Los Lobos, and others.

In this example of his highly individual filmmaking style, Wim Wenders recounts how he has "tried to describe, more like a poem than in a 'documentary,' what moved me so much in their songs and voices."

Also includes performances from T-Bone Burnett, Shemekia Copeland, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Garland Jeffreys, Chris Thomas King, John Mayall, Vernon Reid, Marc Ribot and James 'Blood' Ulmer.

There's a new Wire DVD out with a gig they did in Germany that's meant to be very good.
It's ace! (as they may or may not have said in '79)

Very similar in presentation to Giant on the Box but not quite reaching those heights. Ever see Bruce Gilbert doing a vibes solo? Didn't think so.

Others to recommend:

Butthole Surfers - The Blind Eye Sees All
Frank Zappa - Does Humor Belong in Music?
The Fall - Perverted By Language Bis
Love and Rockets - Sorted!

...and you can relive (relieve?) your (my?) teenage years with the 3-Lux and X-Mix series!

"Happy Nyu Yeuh" exclaimed Aidan Walsh
