At first I thought this was a neighbour's scathing but wonderful criticism of your playing.

Oh I'm brutally bad and he tries hard to not be scathing of other people, because he knows stuff others don't know. A thing like a mandolin is the kind of instrument where people think you're good but that's only because they're not used to hearing it. If that makes sense. I'm totally shit. 3 year old level.

He's the kind of guy that when musicianship comes into the conversation, he'll be sitting there with a bunch of guitar-bashers and wistfully say something like "yeah I love all that too but, violin *is* a bit different". Because it is.
