Ha! I think it'd be his pc to push him over the edge... I noticed about the pre in that compared to earlier meek pre (the vc3?) this new one woks much better with very low impedance and output mics. I'd build a console out of meek stuff if I won the lotto!

what kind of cheap preamps are people using these days and are they any use?

I have a digi001 for recording and its fine, the sound is a little thin though and i wouldnt mind getting a preamp thingy if i thought it would help. i dont want to spend a lot though as i might never use it. this one has those nice meters on it

To get something better than your 001 preamp you'd probably have to spend a couple of hundred.
To see (hear) a noticeable difference that is.

i use the dirt cheap ART tube mp one all the time, getting a few more next time i buy stuff. for its price i recommend it wholeheartedly.

I dont think there could be huge difference between them - its a basic enough piece of electronics, not much you can change in there. the one you have seems to have an advantage with the eq filtering - though i'd tend to eq at the mixing stage rather than input so it wouldn't matter to me... I only went for a second mp for the reason that i had one already and same as pissypants i wanted a matched set for doing stereo things, and to extend the number of condensers i could use at one time.
