tattoo girl didn't write me

But i did get a message from someone with PhD in their username

HOT!!!!

Question: Is the name in the format Dr. Josephine Bloggs, PhD or Josephine Bloggs, PhD or Dr. Josephine Bloggs? If it is the second or third one, go for it. If it's the first one, they've probably got a bullshit PhD and have written a book about homeopathy for dogs. Mind you, if they've put it in their username, they're probably desperate for attention ("HEY! I've got a qualification!!").

A friend of mine just completed her PhD last year, she was already an MD so I'd jokingly started referring to her as Dr Dr, however she got her PhD from the University of Copenhagen and I recently discovered that Danish universities don't usually give their PhD's the title doctor, so if she wanted to be referred to by her full qualifications I suppose she'd have to use that first form.

I didn't know that about Denmark, it seems really strange as PhD by its very nature means doctor. I think the only correct way for your friend would either be Dr. Josephine Bloggs or Josephine Bloggs, MD PhD. The first form is still very much a no-no.

On a side note, MDs are technically lower on the qualifications ladder than a PhD (they are equivalent to a masters degree), they were given the title Dr. as an honour as opposed to being truly doctors (coming from dottore meaning teacher going back to the middle ages when MDs didn't exist, you were a physician or a barber). Of course, if you go on as an MD and do specialist training or become a consultant, you are way up there in terms of education/qualification but the basic degree itself isn't as high falutin' as people seem to think it is.

In which case, oddly enough, in Irish and British hospitals you then seem to drop the title Doctor.

Oh BTW, is it true that it's considered extremely gauche to refer to yourself as Dr. Something Something if you're talking in a non-academic context?

Yeah, it's a bit much but you get that few months grace after graduating where you change all your correspondence to Dr. My Eircom bill is made out to Dr. Me. It feels awesome and sad whenever it arrives.

Though equally, I have earned this title with years of hard work. Fuck what other people think.

Back to the future would be shit if Marty was shouting 'Emmet' all the time. Also, people might not have taken plain old 'Dre' seriously if he didn't have some qualifications to back it up.
