anyone have any experience of doing this? There's two colleagues and I line managed by one manager. She's very close with the overall manager. There's been a list of stuff going on, there's a case for bullying towards one member of staff (not me).

It's been put off for months but one of my colleagues is about to go off sick with stress, she's only 25. Not sure if a complaint is going to have any effect as in the past complaints about unprofessionality have been let go.

Yes. Your situation sounds similiar to what I faced a few years back. Really stressful time of my life. Your best bet early on is to make a note of every bullying incident - time, date, what happened, witnesses. Keep sort of a diary.

Familiarise yourself with the legal definition of bullying.

Remember that once you've a complaint made, they'd be very, very silly to fire you (as my employer at the time found out the hard way).

The normal channel for making complaints is the Health & Safety Authority.

PM me and I'll give you all the help I can.

Good luck, I know how shit it is.

once its put in writing it has to be addressed. you have evidence of asking for this to be dealt with.

Why would you think complaints won't be dealt with?

why informal?

It's not my complaint, its my colleagues. As bad as things are I can't force her to take things forward, only encourage her to try and say something for her own benefit. It's making life hell for the rest of us, we share an office and alot of your time seems to end up bitching about our boss. It's a waste of our and the company time.

it is a small company you're right wobbler. with regards to bullying I was told that even if actions arent intended if a worker feels bullied there is a case. there's plenty of evidence I dont there a risk at all but my colleague thinks otherwise.

I'm quite a strong character hence I think there's less shit said to me due to this. I believe its honestly because my co-worker is young and quite timid that every piece of work is examined to a ridiculous extent (her work is perfectly fine in comparision to the rest of us in the office).

Its just quite stressful at the moment. Informal means something may be done without having a massive row. Well that's the idea

I think if it wasn't the for recession they'd be three employees down at this stage. We're all looking for an alternative for quite some time

On your Bosses computer, go to the Desktop and make a new folder.Rename the new folder to e.g. “Kiddie Porn”
Make a screenshot
Delete the folder that you’d just created
Install the screenshot image as a Desktop wallpaper
Enjoy!

would all the other desktop icons that were also captured in the screenshot not be cluttering up the screen behind the originals and thus making it look crap and fake??

I just tried it.Works perfect. You need to keep your icons on that auto position setting though.

Does your company have a complaints procedure ?
I know that a company I worked didn't have an informal complaints option. Once you approach a person with it along with your written evidence I think they have to make it formal.
Ideally , would you want the bully in question just to be spoken to? I am not sure they can do that. Either way you or the victim will need to writer everything down. It is always best to write things down as soon as they happen.Another thing, tell her not to keep this diary on her computer and not to be emailing details to anyone.Just in case.
It is a pity when situations like this happen , but they are common enough for companies to have procedures in place to deal with it. Good luck

how long have you been employed by these people?
If the answer is less than two years things are a little more tricky.

If she is not in a union can your friend join a trade union?

Recently the courts have taken a strong line on bullying in the workplace, and the unions are dealing with this sort of thing very seriously. She may want to get some representation before does much more.

If she does not know what union she can join you can PM me and I can find out for you.

what is the story with actually recording incidents of bullying for evidence.. On dictaphone, webcam and what not? Too weird and creepy?

"ok, ok, that's great...can you grab him by the front of his jumper again, only this time with a little more...menace?"

Every company is obliged to have an anti-bullying policy. This is basically a document outlining the company's internal procedures relating to bullying.

The chances are your company won't have one.

Asking to see it would be a very worthwhile first step. It's effectively making an informal complaint, if the company don't have one, it will put them in a difficult situation and might scare them into taking bullying more seriously. If they do have one, you or your friend can go through it to consider your next move.
