Also I wasn't in me gear so I attempted a few cycle paths in the town. Holy fuck total rubbish, starting and stopping in random places. No way to get on or off them with out getting off and getting up or down a huge kerb.

a great example - the cycle lane starts up again without a dished kerb, and in a bus lane. so potentially a cyclist would have to stop and lift the bike up onto the cycle lane with a bus behind them. and for good measure, the sign saying it's a cycle lane is right in the middle of the start of the cycle lane; and this is on possibly one of the busiest roads on the northside.

That’s not a cycle lane, it’s a “we painted a line on the footpath so will youse shut up already” lane. Safer to ride in the bus lane, despite the bus drivers who can’t get their heads around that one.

Like, the one on the other side is just as bad, it’s the old ‘you’re road traffic until you aren’t’ thing of stopping at every side road to give motor vehicles right of way. Neanderthal thinking.

Agreed, but it's a (gentle) uphill after people have probably already been climbing for a while (since crossing the tolka) so asking a beginner cyclist to cycle slowly in the bus lane is not an easy thing.

They promised X amount of kms of cycle and we got them. It's just that nobody stipulated they should be connected.

look at what wexford coco did - simply painted a white line inside the hard shoulder of some N roads and called them cycle lanes. and probably declared the infrastructure as delivered.

that's been like that for years. the sign in the middle of the cycle lane is the bus lane sign, not the cycle lane sign.

They're currently retrofitting cycle lanes to roads in Navan. Tearing down walls, chopping trees etc.

My overly complicated spreadsheet tells me that when I cycle to work it's in the region of 6eu not spent on the car per day.

it's the entire price of everthing to do with the vehicle from purchase to fuel at a per/km rate.

TCO.

Marginal would be around 2.70

I don't have an issue with the destruction in order to build the cycle lanes. Just that they'll be unusable when finished.

Still, if it cuts down on the amount of GROWN MEN ON MOUNTAIN BIKES ON THE FOOTPATH I'll be happy.

On further reflection I haven't offset that with price of the bike and bike bits etc which will probably strip a euro or something off it. More as it happens.
