Hello,

I'm in a beer club in work here (Scotland). Every week we take turns to buy beer and talk about it. Pretty sad I know but sure it passes the day. Anyway, it's coming up to my turn again soon. As I'll be home in a bit, I wouldn't mind picking up something local to bring back. Do any of ye know any decent Irish beer or ales that aren't so well known?

I could bring back a 6 pack of Dutch but they have Tennents here which is pretty much the same deal:rolleyes:

Theres nothing sad about drinking in work man.

unless you're a teacher.

then its just plain fookin hilarious.

our teacher was always drunk in class.

he was the coolest teacher ever.

I spent a lot of time drunk in class mesmelf but I was'nt a teacher gnome sain.

Some very decent Irish beers at the moment but unfortunately neither Galway Hooker nor Porterhouse have bottling plants, so they're out. Also, Messrs beers are only rarely put into bottles, which is a real shame.

O'Hara's Stout by the Carlow brewing company is absolutely fantastic, what I wish Guinness tasted like. They're also doing some stronger special edition at the moment, which is even nicer.

The Whitewater brewery in Belfast do a few good beers and should be easy enough to find. They are Clothworthy Dobbin (a lovely porterish ale), Belfast Ale (standard enough but very worthwhile ale. Similiar to a lot of English bottled ales such as Abbot, Bishops Finger that sort of thing.) Belfast Lager (haven't tasted it. I've had so few worthwhile lagers from UK or Ireland that I never got around to trying it). It might be nice to get all three.

Carlow brewing company also do a Red Ale called O'Hara's Red which some people swear by but Red Ale isn't my favourite style. They also make a wheat beer called Curim which is nice enough, but a little sweet.

I can't think of any more at the moment but I'll go for a walk and think about it. If I can think of more, I'll let you know.

Let me know if you need advice where you can buy these beers.

here, while yis are on the topic-any guinness drinkers that think its changed since diaego bought them out?the lad in work is convinced that diaego are evil personified and are fucking with guinness,i dont drink so wouldnt have a clue....cheers :)

Weaver's Gold blond ale from Lurgan. It's pretty nice, not sure where you can get it down here though, maybe Redmond's in Ranelagh?

There's an Irish beer and whiskey festival in the Porterhouses around Dublin at the moment. Hoping to get into that at some stage. If you're over before that ends you might get some ideas.

I've only started drinking in the last couple of years, so could't really say. Glad they stopped with all the Brewhouse Series shite though :)

To be honest, in my own experience I haven't noticed anything but I only would have started paying attention in the last few years.

As stouts go, it's seriously bland and apparently been getting blander and blander for decades now. Still like it though.

Its lovely isn't it! they only have it in one pub down here and there seem to always be problems with the keg when i go to get my second pint!ninjaaaa its kinda chocolate-y without being as overpowering as the youngs choc stout and its very smooth and tasty!:) I want one now!!

sound, ill take yr word on it,if you cant trust a wobbler who can you trust?

I actually think it was a good idea, it's just a shame that they didn't take the opportunity and do something genuinely exciting with it. Very slight variations on Guinness is pointless.

I would love to see a back to basics beer by Guinness. Stronger, maltier, unnnitrogenated and cask conditioned. They could charge way more for it and market it at wankers like me.

Problem is, it would be tantamount to admitting that their main product is mediocre.
