Both are valid for fox. Calling a fox a red dog is probably closer to the mark than calling a rabbit a little dog (coinín). The same construct is also used for the German Kaninchen. So lots of people back in the day thought that rabbits were dogs.

If I was you I'd get some double tracking going on the vox,pop it up a bit,gnome sain..and I'd lash in a 5th and octave harmony on the chorus.
And maybe a key change to the supertonic near the end.
