Nah, not Google. They seem to be one of the few companies out there who aren't in it solely for the money. They even have a department dedicated to ensuring that no product or service they offer goes against the original philosophy and ethics of the organisation. I can't see them cashing in on this.

they are cashing in on the ads displayed on gmail. so personally I can't see why they would bother to piss off all their customers by shrinking the storage capacity.

They need to make money in order to expand their service. And better to charge corporate entities, rather than the general public. Hence the ads. Also, they've made the ads completely non-intrusive so you can easily choose to ignore them.
