"The pianist and his Berlin-based band nodded to hip hop and drum'n'bass while fizzing with the energy of experimental rock: this is the future sound of jazz." Stuart Nicholson, The Observer.

Michael Wollny (piano)
Eva Kruse (bass)
Eric Schaefer (drums)

The emergence of collective trio [em] confirms a sharp sense that some of jazz's most exciting music is coming from Europe. This is music full of jarring energy, edgy themes, shifting rhythms, moods and harmonic density reflecting their unfinished and undefined Berlin home.

The collaboration of three musicians is the idea behind the trio [em] founded by Wollny in 2002 with bassist Eva Kruse and drummer Eric Schaefer. Northerner Kruse alternates between expressive experiments in the Arne Jansen Trio and the electrifying dance floor beats of the Tied & Tickled Trio. Eric Schaefer may currently be the most interesting drummer in Berlin. He studied with Stockhausen's drummer Christoph Caskl and has won national acclaim with the band Nickendes Perlgras.

The classically trained Michael Wollny discovered jazz upon receiving a present of Keith Jarrett's Koln Concert. He recorded his debut with a trio of Wolfgang Kriener on bass and Joachim Leyh on drums in 2001 and was quickly invited to join the HR Jazz ensemble. A friendship with sax innovator Heinz Sauer led to a series concerts and releases including the award-winning A Certain Beauty.

"By saying [em] announces the arrival of a major young band I realise this may be construed as a monumental understatement, particularly since it's my album of the year. On first listen it may seem like information overload, with ideas spinning every which way - then, gradually, it becomes clear there's a unified musical vision at work here…. incredibly detailed sound tapestries that are strong on visuals - the ugly beauty of dark gothic tones, dazzling kaleidoscopes of musical colours - but are also full of subtle rhythmic allusions and mystic signifiers. The faultlessly fluent drummer Eric Schaefer locks onto Eva Kruse's popping basslines by way of nodding to hip hop and drum'n'bass, while Michael Wollny on piano uses space and dynamics to frame the endless flow of ideas from his restless imagination." Stuart Nicholson, The Observer.
