Michel Polnareff is arguably the best of the French orchestral pop crew (well, I'd argue it). "Polnareff's" is my favourite album of his, I think its easy enough to source.

Les Rita Mitsouko made some crazy beautiful pop in the 80s (more recent stuff not so beautiful); this is somehow the most-played song ever on French radio:

Well, imagine a French guy on a French internet forum asking for Irish music, and being told to check out Count John McCormack, My Bloody Valentine, the music from Riverdance, B*Witched, Primordial, Dropkick Murphys and Decal.

Yes, before we all post here let us all spare a thought for what Jonnie Onion Rings is posting on le Tumped!

Jean-Claude Vannier - Les Enfants Assassin Des Mouches. One of my all-time faves that.

http://fillessourires.blogspot.com/

Great blog for Mp3s by cooing, breathy French chicks.

I'm surprised no-one mentioned Barbara earlier in the thread. Pal of Jacques Brel, Holocaust survivor, quite a life. Stage-name of Monique Serf, I think.
Anyhoo her second eponymous album on the Philips label is the one to get. Released in 1962 I think. Like a sick fck I transferred my vinyl copy to cd.

If anyone wats a compilation of obscure Gallic curios I'll bang out oh...three copies to the first three PMs.

that whole Paris scene was really rich back then, actually, and I think it hasn't been replaced

Or "le reggae et le jazz-funk".

He was telling me that the problem in Paris is that it's very rigid, there's little crossover, and musicians are not valued beyond playing in covers bands etc. I noticed as well that a good deal of interesting music in France is made by immigrants, or people whose parents were immigrants, so like some Berber music and stuff like that is pretty good - more down south than Paris I guess.
