Fallon and Byrne can suck my balls (1 Viewer)

Sawyers is long gone sadly.

Has it not just moved around the corner or something? Somewhere near Break For The Border?

What's the story with that Kish place in Smithfield?

What are the best butchers in town?

Not really town but the butchers in the centre of Rialto is fantastic. And they also do nice fish.

I use the other FX Buckley's on Talbot Street, it's near my work. No free range chicken or pork though.

That branch never stocks the interesting game, and charges higher prices for the weighed stuff. Worth the walk to the main branch...

No free range meat in most butchers in Dublin. Not so relevant for beef or lamb - but when it comes to chicken, buy a whole free range chicken and joint it yourself - Dunnes have a 2 for €10 Irish Free Range Chicken deal at the moment.

As for pigs - for free range you need to go to specialist breeders - and I'm not aware of any butchers that stock them - but I am not sure that there are as many animal welfare issues with Irish pigs as are prevalent in the U.K. - I could be wrong...

Dublin Pig specialists are Frank's Pork Butchers on Camden Street.

The so-called-butcher in Rialto is an expert in blowing his own trumpet - but he does not butcher on-site, and is not really a butcher - he sells pre-packaged meat products. For which he over-charges massively.

Kish on Bow Street is excellent - for example - I remember them quoting me €21per kilo for Monkfish - and for speed I had to go to Rialto butcher guy - who charged me €28... He charges something like €4.50 for Maldon Sea Salt which should cost around €3 - so expect 150% mark-up there. But Kish is the business...

My Da raves about Kish but it's a bit out of my way. I've used the FXB's on Moore St and have been impressed. To my shame, I'm not very price sensitive so have no idea where's expensive and where isn't. When I realize that I've no money left, sometimes I think back on where it must have gone.

I always assumed that unless you hear otherwise, pork has been reared indoors. I'd like to pay more attention to the provedence of my food, but when it comes down to it, I'm just so fucking lazy.

Jesus that told me off. I don't really care about the fact that he is not up to his elbows in blood personally slaughtering the animals out the back.

He's got a great range of stuff, they are really friendly and helpful, and two minutes walk from my house. I'll take your word for it that you can get the same stuff cheaper somewhere else ( I do remember being pretty taken aback once by the price of some prawns but never thought the meat was expensive) but I don't buy/cook meat more than once a week so I can live with that ....

Will check out Kish though. I have this idea that they have non-standard opening hours though. Is that right?

Look - don't get me wrong - Rialto-Meat-Man is competent. He sells good quality produce, and a wide range of pre-prepared goods, as well as lots of condiments and associated things. It's just that he's a Deli now - and not really a butcher.

And he is quite the salesman. For example - he will advise people about wines - despite the fact that he's teetotal. Or advise people about vegetables - despite the fact that he only really eats meat.

He is a convenient one-stop-shop. BUT... You will pay on average a 25-50% premium on all the produce. And, for me, that is unacceptable.

Unless I've left it too late - because he does open till seven, where most butchers will close at five (in D8).

(Kish. by the way, opens normal office hours, since they're a wholesaler with a public-facing shop - 10-5.)

But my top tip for thrifty meat shopping after six is to go to a halal butcher (which are prevalent her in D8 - don't know so much about elsewhere) - as they generally open till nine - and the meat is generally very fresh (well, the lamb, in my experience), and generally cheaper than elsewhere - also, they will carve up lamb leg/shoulder for you, where Irish butchers are generally reluctant.

[Top Halal Butcher Tip: The place beside Vicar Street - butcher at the back - check out the Merguez sausages - beef/lamb/chili - yum! - they also do great lamb leg - which they will fillet/slice if you want]

Fair enough .. but I think this is why I like the place so much.

That place is really good all right. It's a bit out of my way now but I used to live down the street from there and it was a life-saver. Tins of moutabal (sp?) ... yum.

as a long-term 'batter resident I am ashamed to say I didn't know Kish had a retail shop.

Fresh in Smithfield is probably the most central Fresh and it's only ok. Meat is pretty dear but it's so handy for me it gets a lot of my cash. M&S always gets my veg money.

Is there a Fresh on Camden Street? I think there used to be anyway. Thats kind of Central.

it's almost opposite Whelans - you can't miss it, it's a big white building. A friend of mine has a Fresh in her apartment block - it's near the end of Pearse St I think?

Yeah, down by the fancy new improved Docks area. Its like Sydney or San Fran down there.. even though it isn't.

My Mam says the nicest Christmas turkey she ever got was in Fresh on Malahide Road, opposite that monstrous Tesco. The butcher dude got rid of all the bones and rolled it all up and told her the best way to cook it. It was pretty gorgeous alright...

Where the Spar used to be

indeed. it's not great, though: in particular, the fruit and veg selection is pretty poor. better than a spar, like, but not amazing. the one in grand canal dock is better, but i wouldn't get overexcited by it, again the produce is not a patch on f&b.

m&s is pretty good for a lot of things, even though everything is packaged to bejasus and it's not cheap. fruit and veg v. good quality, some nice meat and fish.

yes, many many times but he hasnt returned my calls.:(
