Loving the French table tennis lad
I hope he destroys the Chinese

And the Cuban wrestler should be a far bigger deal than he is. 5 golds in a row. Never ever been done before.

41 and winning in the Olympics, weighing 130kg and winning at the Olympics.

Simultaneously trolling who I was 3 years ago and who I was 23 years ago.

Coming into Paris, it had been more than a decade since he’d so much as given up a single point at the Olympics!!

Other Cuban wrestlers moved country just so they would have a chance to compete (they'd never get past him in Cuba)

A generational talent. And almost no one knows who he is.

El Terrible.

the 1500m final reminded me a little of this

That's amazing
Ben so long since I seen it, I had forgotten about it

Does he even mention the time Treacy got?

I was thinking of the Hans-Peter Ferner and Coe. But I can't find a video.

The 1980 Crystal Palace athletics clip has about 7 million hits - for a non championship race. Shows how big athletics was then.

i am deeply suspicous of all the modern white runners beating African and black athletes much more often than 10 years ago. Not good.
another great watch in a similar vein:

One of his last wins and definitely best one I've seen. Never gets old. Couldn't happen with race radios, TVs in team managers cars etc.

'lympics Boxin' Finals from last night -

Men's Lightweight (63.5;KG) Final
Sofiane Oumiha (FRA) v Erislandy Alvarez (CUB)

The winner took his country's only gold of Paris.
The silver lad is terrific too but was well beaten by a master of the ring. The refs were generous to the runner up.

Middleweight Final (80 KG)
Nurbek Oralbay (KAZ) v Oleksandr Khyzhnziak (UKR)

The winner was a relentless punching machine. Never let up. Runner up again contributed hugely to an action packed bout.

Last week I wanted to post Jose Torres Gil's (ARG) Gold medal run in BMX park (very aggressive with lots of huge airs) and bronze medalist Anthony Jeanjean's run (relentless trick after trick crowd pleaser more technical than Torres).

Geordie lad with Irish name (Kieran Reilly) was 2nd (very technical tricks but less exciting to me than other medalists).

In the end it was what the judges preferred as any of 'em clouda won.
The were they easily best three in comp.
Funnily enough in qualifiers Torres did not get a huge score for a similarly exciting run...

Another thing I cannot find footage of:
Also got into rugby 7's big time.
It strips out nearly all the things I don't like about 15 a side game (especially scrums).
Canada women had won bronze in Tokyo. A stunning late come back against France set up a semi v favourites Australia.
Canada were 12-0 down seconds before HT.
They had not got into Australia's final third and several brilliant tackles stopped them from conceding three more tries.
Then... a penalty was awarded against Australia and everyone except Charity Williams lost concentration. The Canadian tapped the ball unopposed and charged 70/80 meters and did a roll over as she grounded the ball under the posts.
The Aussies fell to bits in the second half and Canada brilliantly won 21-12.

Canada took the lead against NZ in Final but went down 19-14.
They took defeat with much better grace that the teams they beat.

The slalom canoeing 4 canoe races (think BMX racing or some similar winter X games events especially snowboarding) was really exciting mayhem at times.

Looking forward to the marathons at weekend. Will be up early for that.
We had a great watch along on Thumped of last Olympic marathons in Tokyo (Sapparo actually where it was warmer than Tokyo that weekend).
Anyway don't know if we have numbers for that anymore...

that's the sort of pushing at the rules which gets me interested in sport.
i have on several occasions bent the ear of a rugby playing friend about the possibility, in the dying moments of a game when you're camped on the try line, of subbing a dwarf on, passing the ball to him, with two big burly fuckers standing either side of him, who would then pick him up and physically throw him over the scrum, and the try line.
my friend is sceptical as to the legality of this.

Very interesting - had no idea about any of this.
Charity Williams' try celebration was just a roll forward on the ground though like a kid would do in PE!
She had two big braided ponytails and after nearly being dead and buried she put Canada back on the road.
Really annoys me that I cannot find videos of all this cool stuff.
Pakistani thrower Arshad Nadeem won gold in the Javelin tonight. As a bonus he beat Indian defending champ Neeraj Chopra, with a Grenadan thrower taking bronze. A Kenyan also finished in top 5.
There was always a European hegemony in Javelin and it is gone now

Gawd. How I hated that programme.
It was demented.
You can't make South California look like prairie.
