Edinburgh! (2 Viewers)

does anyone have anymore accommodation recommendations they'd like to make? i've found some cheap flights for august but it's festival season so a lot of places are booked up and what's left that i can find is a bit expensive for my tight budget.

i lived in the travelodge in haymarket for a fortnight when i moved here first. very alan partridge of me

Hey, I'm off to Edinburgh in a month, I've looked through the thread here, some good tips on boozers, are Pivo, Liquid Rooms still there?

And apart from them, what are seen as good live music venues in the town? Want to check out the local scene and some native bands, but dont wanna end up in the Edinburgh equivalent of Fibbers!

liquid rooms are still closed alright after fire damage.

Henry's cellar on Morrison Street is a good venue for gigs. A complete dive like, but a good variety of music nonetheless. Cabaret Voltaire is a fancier place but it's fairly dismal for gigs. In fact, truth be told most of Edinburgh is. Glasgow is the place to be for live music :(

Okay so I'll keep an eye out for these. Crazy to think that a city that size only has 2 venues of note? I mean Waterford is maybe 5 times smaller for example and has 3-4 decent venues. Mintal!

Nah, Edinburgh has good larger venues, just few if any decent smaller spots. Another smaller place, The Venue, closed down a few years back, which used to have good stuff on. The Queens Hall, Usher Hall, the Playhouse, Festival Hall etc. are all proper venues, but cater for 600 - 3000 seater gigs. BUt yeah, Seanface is right, Glasgow is at least 3-4 times busier for gigs.

Off to aul reekie on Thursday, thanks for the tips so far, any other hidden gems to shop/see/eat that I might be told about?

Also has anyone been to the Edinburgh Dungeon yet? I know it'll be touristy and not very authentic to say the least but I am a sucker for this sort of stuff and they have a vertical drop hurdy-gurdy as my dear Mam would say. Worth a laugh or a total bust?

replying to myself, saaad ...

But for posterity, the Edinburgh Dungeon has had some horrible reviews online, avoid... so the Camera Obscura and a graveyard tour it is to soak up the inner tourist in me

Had these recommendations from a recent visitor
My Fav: Holyrood Tavern

1.Oxford Bar
2.Bannerman's
3.The Last Drop
4.The Bow Bar
5. Maggie Dickson's

Then proofed by a local.
It's certainly ok for people who want to see a bit of edinburgh. My favourite bars are a little further away and to be honest could be in any city in the world. Those ones are slap in the bits where you know for sure you're supping in edinburgh.
oxford bar - tiny. think the dubliner. or littlest bar (only smaller)
bannermans - not been but not because it's bad. just not in my circle.
the bow bar - one of the best pubs in edinburgh.
holyrood tavern - good boozer.
maggis dicksons - almost never go. gets overflow I think from biddy mulligans (where I go for some sports occaisions)
last drop - good little pub.

if you end up in a place called espionage, something has gone wrong.
If you end up in fingers piano bar at 3 am, it's probably gone really well. (note, you must be drunk and keen to sing in a big crowd)

Looks like it's the Bow Bar for me.

good if you like your beers and ales

and I live above this so I am a bit biased. lovely little quiet spot with a deadly beer garden
http://www.starbar.co.uk/

most places will be fucking wedged with the time of year. bars can stay open till 3am and clubs till 5am so ye will have no problem keeping her lit!

Great info, thanks.

Free wifi in the Star. Decent.

The airport website says a taxi ride to the city is 'about 25 minutes'.
Any idea what that might cost?

Edit: Will get the bus. Says it's £3.50 to the city.

If you're planning on heading to anything in the Frigne Festival i'd highly recomend going seeing Tabú by Nofitstate Circus, I was just at it last weekend and it was amazing, miles better and avante-garde from what you'd expect of your average run of the mill circus.

Usually I prefer to go regularly - City Nightclub, Very nice and proper one. But some others also night bar like
- Best western Braid Hills Hotel
- Avoca Bar and Grill
- Cameo Bar
- The Bow Bar
