Myself and the girlfriend are drivin across the states for 2 months, it too expensive to rent so has anyone bought a car to drive across? No stupid negative comments please I've read enough of them. Cheers!

friends of mine got hooked up with some comapny who are selling a car, and you technically deliver it to the person who's buying it and they more or less crossed the states that way.

when are you's heading? i did this in november a few years ago and got stuck in an early blizzard season, i'd say avoid that.

I'd imagine you'd need a US driver's licence to start with.
The US can be quite bureaucratic with stuff like this.
I can see you also being asked for an address to register the car and maybe running into issues with insuring it then.

Buying the car itself should be easy enough. Craig's List should have loads.
Also the WantAd is probably a more specialised auto site.

Sounds like great fun. The missus and I did a short road trip (long by Irish standards!) in Midwest and New England in November. It was only lovely. It's mad how empty the US is. You don't have to get far outta NYC to find wilderness.

Thanks for the replies doodz, you wouldn't believe the stupid negative comments I've read while researching this. So drivin from california to new york in 40 days all the car rental companies cost 3000 to rent with the one way drop off but when using a broker such as Holidayautos.com or booker.com you can get it for 800.

I wasn't goin to spend 3000 renting which is why I wanted to buy. You can buy but you need an address for insurance.

I'm away for 6 months, in oz now, heading to nz next month, then spending June and July driving from Cali to new York and up to Toronto. Will let ye k ow how I get on rentin and driving for that long
