and of course theres the other assumption that living a clean and healthy life is no fun.

I'm sure I'm missing out on lots of stuff living my life the way I do. But I have no complaints.
Clean and healthy living is WAYYYY more fun if yer ready to embrace it.Aww yeah..sure yer mind gets sharper..so does yer sense of humour.

Yer spellinfg suffers though.

The idea that you'd get bored with living after x years is just insane. Anybody here bored with music? Eating? Sex? Just cos you've done something before doesn't mean it's not fun
you're asking a bunch of people whose median age is probably somewhere in their 30s, i.e. people who have averaged maybe 15 years as adults. try quardupling that figure.

I'm asking a bunch of people whose horror at old people outweighs their capacity to think. Just because old people are, by and large, ugly doesn't mean they're not having fun. I'm one of the oldest fuckers here, my parents are just back from their first visit to India and I'm damn sure they're still riding. Will they be up to the same shit in another 20 years? If they're not it won't be because they got fucking bored with it, it'll be because they're no longer physically able to. The idea that there'd be no point in living for ever because it'd be boring is just sour grapes. We can't live forever, but if we could it'd be fucking deadly

"When I was young, I was extremely scared of dying, but now I think it a very, very wise arrangement. It’s like a light that is extinguished. Not very much to make a fuss about."

Philip Larkin said:
I work all day, and get half-drunk at night.
Waking at four to soundless dark, I stare.
In time the curtain-edges will grow light.
Till then I see what's really always there:
Unresting death, a whole day nearer now,
Making all thought impossible but how
And where and when I shall myself die.
Arid interrogation: yet the dread
Of dying, and being dead,
Flashes afresh to hold and horrify.
The mind blanks at the glare. Not in remorse
- The good not done, the love not given, time
Torn off unused - nor wretchedly because
An only life can take so long to climb
Clear of its wrong beginnings, and may never;
But at the total emptiness for ever,
The sure extinction that we travel to
And shall be lost in always. Not to be here,
Not to be anywhere,
And soon; nothing more terrible, nothing more true.

This is a special way of being afraid
No trick dispels. Religion used to try,
That vast, moth-eaten musical brocade
Created to pretend we never die,
And specious stuff that says No rational being
Can fear a thing it will not feel, not seeing
That this is what we fear - no sight, no sound,
No touch or taste or smell, nothing to think with,
Nothing to love or link with,
The anasthetic from which none come round.

And so it stays just on the edge of vision,
A small, unfocused blur, a standing chill
That slows each impulse down to indecision.
Most things may never happen: this one will,
And realisation of it rages out
In furnace-fear when we are caught without
People or drink. Courage is no good:
It means not scaring others. Being brave
Lets no one off the grave.
Death is no different whined at than withstood.

Slowly light strengthens, and the room takes shape.
It stands plain as a wardrobe, what we know,
Have always known, know that we can't escape,
Yet can't accept. One side will have to go.
Meanwhile telephones crouch, getting ready to ring
In locked-up offices, and all the uncaring
Intricate rented world begins to rouse.
The sky is white as clay, with no sun.
Work has to be done.
Postmen like doctors go from house to house.

fuck sake egg, that's one of my favourite poems and I've just gone back through this whole thread to figure out how it's relevant, only to find out that it's not and the whole damn thread is just the usual thumped circular arguments, Washing Cattle getting his lad out and Ian getting the horn for aulwans

damn you egg, may you live to 500

Ah 7 no tomorrow said it.

Also given the state the world is in due to overpopulation and the state national finances are in due to people living longer. Is it not more immature to say you want to live longer ?

I'm not fatalistic or immauture I'm just facing facts here. We are not supposed to live that long. No other mammals do.

I'd imagine by the time we hit 70 the world will be fucked. precluding the oportunities for, eh, living to 70 in the first place.

either that or we'll all have jet packs...
