No Denmark threads. I know it's a boring place...but still. Thought it was a bit sad.

We have a lot to offer...
bacon
the little mermaid
high taxation
stupid ungdomshus supporters
but...
we also have great conditions for cyclists.

I've been there...........twice! It's like a nice, picturesque version of Germany.

They have a museum of porn too.

It's also home of the King!!!!!

the little mermaid is arguably the worst tourist attraction the world over. All that build up about a shitty little statue. Its crap.

If it wasn't for the really nice walk out to it from the middle of the city I probably would have took its head off.

I was there during the riots last March. That kind of added to the place.

Its nice, definitely worth seeing, but kind of unremarkable too. That shopping street (can't remember the name of it - the big long street) is like a bigger version of grafton st. It even has the same shops on it (uk high st crap), so if you're Irish it doesn't really feel a whole lot different than being at home.

Its expensive. Their currency is head-wrecking.

The people aren't necessarily that friendly (no worse than the Irish though I suppose) and the service in restuarants and the like is the worst I've ever experienced (I might be paranoid, but its particularly bad if they detect you're foreign).

The sweet shops are great though. And the squares. And that big palace place near the Tivoli. And the Tivoli (though it was closed when I was there, but it does look the business).

I didn't make it to Christiana, mostly because of the riots, but I reckon that'd be deffo worth checking out too.

Overall, go, its well worth the visit, but it won't blow you away to the same extent, say, Amsterdam might (or did for me).

Edit: The shopping street is the Stroget - I just remembered that there now

Copenhagen == amazing.
Everywhere else I saw in Denmark == terrifyingly flat and slightly creepy.

There was basically nothing I didn't like about Copenhagen. Christiana was open at the time. I even dropped into Ungdomshus for a swift half.

Once you leave the city though, not cool. We went driving, and I felt weirded out by the place. Not even the training cycling teams could keep the creeping fear away. I didn't like it at all at all. Its far too flat for a start. Its just weird.
I normally dont like cities, and do like being out in the country, but I was incredibly relieved to finally get back to copenhagen.

A bit random, but also a few times when we were out in the country (two Danes, myself and my US girlfriend) and local Danish people just felt it was their right to start getting a little aggro with my gf once they found out she was from the US.

Unpleasant tone, one waiter stopped half way through putting cups of coffee out on the table and asked her "did you vote for Bush?" and only gave her the coffee once she said no. This sort of thing happened a few times out there. It was obviously partly jokey, but it was partly quite aggressive and bullying.

I personally felt those sort of things to be over the line.

I have to say, while fine, I love Scandinavia, I find some Scandinavians a little holier than tho and tending towards snootiness about a couple of things. By all means be unhappy with US foreign policy, but having snipes at my missus is not on.

Just by the way, a lot of both Norwegians and Danes are ferociously nationalistic. More nationalistic than Americans often.
I find nationalism creepy.
I dont know. With this Scandinavian attitude, (and its more pronounced in Norway btw) there is some element of pot calling the kettle black.

That will be all.
Not a very well worded post. Oh well.

Anyone ever been to Aalborg? I'll be there at the end of the month .. what's it like?

I've been to the most surreal diner just a few minutes walk from the railway station/tivoli/etc. Chairs and tables bolted to the floor, a menu that had probably 500 items of chipper-type food. A 70+ couple seemed to own and manage the place. Even the food looked like it was made in the 50s. Not very tasty but one of the best places I've ever eaten in!
