Cycling/Bicycle People...?? (1 Viewer)

Yeah. The whole lid or no lid debate.
We were not allowed race with out a lid. And, if we were caught training with the club without one we got a bollocking.
However... on my weekday road spins, out over Sally Gap / Glendalough etc, I often didnt wear one.
I dont know why. I sort of felt that I didnt need it if I wasnt riding in a pack.

In hindsight... this was silly, and I was lucky. The reason for this was I grew up not wearing a lid. I always wear one now. At this point if I get on my bike with out one, say in the morning when I am tired, I realise a few miles up the road, I am completely freaked out.

I would say... buy a nice once, and wear it all the time for a year. Then make up your mind. If you still dont like it, alright. I bet you will prefer wearing it though.

And... wrt not hitting your head, I head this argument before. The thing is, people do hit their heads, sooner or later. Do enough miles, crash enough crashes, and you will hit your head. And when you hit it will be hard. Or... when the bike hits your head. Nasty. I still have the scars I think...

her indoors had a nasty fall from her bike a few years back, rode over an unmarked pothole, front wheel jammed and she went over the top. got a nasty knock to the head and was in hospital.
she was wearing a helmet and i think the injury could have been really awful if she hadn't

always worn one ever since, even though it makes me look even stupider

The lads all say the same.
You come off a bike, and you will :
Sprain your wrist,
Break your wrist,
Break you clavicle,
Smack your head.

I mean as you progress up the crash scale, you progress down that list. At the end is the smack your head option, and, when you are here, you are in a bad crash. So, almost by definition, if you hit your head, it will be a hard hit, since your body does its best to keep you from not doing that.

Then there are the freak accidents... I had a bike spin through the air in one crash, and the bike, via the handlebar stem landed on my head. A lot of blood.
Suffice to say, when I passed by the same spot a few days later, the blood stains were still there. No helmet. Very very silly. :D

the one time I didn't wear my helmet this crusty guy in front of me cycled smack into a taxi door and went flying into the middle of the road - the helmet saved him

I was right behind him and going just as fast. Coulda been me. Now I always wear my helmet.

It will save your life or even better will nearly ensure you dont spend the rest of it as a vegetable which would suck for you but even worse for your immediate family whose lives will be ruined by having to look after you.

The caved in skull look is definitley out this season Deafmute.

yes an helmet saved my brother's life before

Dude, what are the 'lapierre' range of bikes like? (he sells them in Tallaght). Trying to decide between Giant FCR3, Specialized Sirrus Entry Level and a Lapierre 100, priced 559, 599 and 459 respectively.....cheers

Try Cycle Inn in Tallaght as it is run by a dude who actually rides bikes himself and runs a club so his shop is worth supporting.

I cant seem to find the spec of the Lappierre.
Do you have a link to it?

To be honest its very hard to choose spec wise between Giant and Specialised.
They are in direct competiton with each other and I would imagine they be very similar components wise.
My advice is to try the two and go with the one which feels best as they are both very reputable brands with lifetime guarantee on the frames.

Who did you deal with in Cycle Inn?Was it an Aussie dude in his forties?
Fair play for going there.

Lappierre looks good for 459.

yeah it's actually 439euro. just wondered what they are like as a brand...

i've had a specialized rockhopper and i am a big specialized fan but don't wanna splash out mad money. it's more just for exercise and keeping fit. might go on a few runs with a local team but nothing major. the gear levers and v-brakes on the giant just look like cheap rubbish

also, the new 07 specialized frames are now really curved, like the s sworks frames. maybe i could get a good deal on a 06 frame.. decisions, decisions

Im not familiar with the lappierre brand but Superstore seem to be stocking them too.
Find out what the warranty is on the frame and if its lifetime go for it.

1. my cable that attaches the gears to the back bit has come out of the thing that holds it in place. should I be able to pull it back in manually? Because I can't.

2. wearing loose skirts while cycling- why is life so hard?

thanks

put your right hand gears up to 1 and make sure it goes into gear.

Now without pedalling or turning the cranks click it back down to seven.

The cable should be sufficiently slack enough for you to pop back in.

Just seen this thread. I know very little about bikes other than that I like riding them. I would second Brian's praise for Giant though.

On helmets I've just invested in one of these:

Make sure when your buying a helmet that it fits properly. These guys go up to a 62cm which is handy when you've a huge head like mine.

Also Brian, got out on the Marin trail last week. Great fun with a really nice section of about seven jumps in a row.

Wow looks cool.there is loads of purpose built trails in Wales.Your pretty lucky with that.

brianoak??

sorry for the hassle again but what you think of this?

think i might go for it as the 07 range of specialized (sirrus) are expensive and the frames have gone all s-works curvey.

i'd like a small framed bike like the giant is, as in its(FCR 3) type of high-seat-post-geometry goings-on.

they are the business for the money.
I have sold about 15 of them personally and about 50 altogether in the shop this year and never had any complaints.
