ART NOT BANKS- our centre's not for sale! Carnival and Convergence at the City Arts Centre 6.30pm till late 29th November

(sorry about the cheesey GR slogans .. i didn't write this)

alternatively :
ARTHOUSE WANK NOT HIGH-RISE BANKS- our Papers are for sale!
Carnival and Convergence at the City Arts Centre 6.30pm till late 29th November ..

Inner city Dublin 2001. Banks tower over-head and, in
the shadows, a little island of music, art,
imagination and community still holds on. But not for
long, if the banks and developers get their way!
The local area, from Ringsend and the Docklands to
East Wall, has already taken the brunt of this
government's relentless drive for privatisation. They
want to make profits from burning rubbish instead of
providing environmentally friendly waste disposal as a
public service. They sell off public sites for private
development instead of building public housing. Now
they even want our arts centre.

What's so important about City Arts Centre?
Over the years, City Arts Centre has:

·Provided one of the few wheelchair accessible arts
spaces in the city
·Supported the South Docks Festival
·Organised the multicultural Feile Fiesta along the
quays
·Helped the No High Rise campaign
·Organised arts programmes in local schools
·Provided space, equipment and encouragement to
thousands of theatre and dance companies, music
groups, visual and other artists
·Connected the world of professional arts and
voluntary participation

Why not keep it?
If the government can spend over £40 million on the
Farmleigh 'guest house' for visiting dignitaries, it
should be able to buy the site for the city and its
people. Why not have an arts centre run by the
community for the community? It would be easy to set
up a cooperative including the arts user groups, the
disabled community and people living in the area, who
could ensure the running of a truly open and creative
space. A place for:
· New art work and experimentation
· Rehearsal and gigs
· Youth arts groups and training
· Clubs and festivals
· Community meetings and forums..
Why not let the people involved decide?
'As a local political representative and resident, I'm
shocked to think that this building may be for sale
and I will make every effort to ensure that this
building remains as a community based city arts
centre. City Arts Centre has provided a great service
to the community and long may it do so.' - Dathaí
Dolin, Sinn Féin Councellor.
'This area has been swamped by the property developers
and the financial services, which make huge profits
while paying hardly any tax. We have seen the gas
works site sold off, rather than being used for local
people's needs - and now the possibility of the City
Arts Centre going the same way. Everyone should get
down to the carnival on 29th November and send a clear
message to the developers and the government - Our
arts centre is not for sale!!' - Shay Ryan, Socialist
Workers Party Ringsend.

Its a shame the city arts centre is going, but "help" I live on townsend street, which is right underneath those towers on Georges Quay, and I kinda like them to be honest with you...where do you live? Probably miles away from there.

Shit, I'm gonna be real embarassed if you don't.

I have lived there for a few years. I think the question you're trying to ask me, and maybe I'm wrong, is am I some knob end who works in the IFSC across the river, lives in a flat detached from the people of Townsend street and generally tries to keep it that way. If thats the question the answer is no. Two of the social focal points of townsend street are the Wind Jammer Pub and the Seashell chipper, both of which I go to quite often and would often get to talk to local people, and of all the gripes they have about this and that, the high rise building never came up in converstion. Neither have I ever overheard a conversation relating to it.

Was there an implication there that a native of Townsend Street wouldn't be involved in a discussion on this board about these issues? You were pretty quick to ask that question.

Thats not the smell of intellectual snobbery I'm getting is it??

Wow Dan, those High-rises DO sound cool.

So how much do they charge for a medium sized room with a decent PA, 4 mics and a good bass amp?

I think the point is that the banking institutions do nothing for you (except look nice in your instance),(or $crew you).
The City Arts is an asset to us all...

Totally aggreed.

And as far as I'm aware the high rises aren't exclusivelt for banking, some of the space in the towers are for letting. If you're up for it, you could start up a rehearsal space on the top floor. Attract all the wannabe Verve tossers.

So you live/rent there but not from there?

Nope, you're wrong, wasnt asking that question at all, you already said in a prior post you lived on Townsend Street so you obviously dont live in the IFSC. Just curious as to whether the campaign to stop the high rise was backed by local people (as was the previous campaign against the apartments being built on the campshire on City Quay.. which they won).

The Wind Jammer are bastards sometimes, unless you're there at 7am ON THE DOT then they dont let you in, no matter how much you hammer on the glass.

Good for getting cans though. Mahaffys is a nicer spot I think. The seashell... hmm, Lido chips are better maybe.

No there wasnt. You already said you lived there, I was just wondering if you were from there.

I'm bored in work and just happened to reply to it soon after you'd posted it.

I dont know what that means but I dont smell anything around here.. except my own fart, had an extremely dodgy vegetarian canelone in the work canteen at lunch.

Christ almighty, I think I'm getting that one now.

PHWOAAAH.

Maybe, why do you think I'm wearing a smog mask in the picture? Some of those anarchist types do give out quite a lot of gas. :)

So someone actually likes the Towers of Doom?
Mundo bizarro....
Jeepers creepers, even the developers thought they were crap.
The big problem with the last "No High Rise" campaign was that it neglected to note that a tall building was going to be built on that site next to the City Arts no matter what, as there was already planning permission extant.
The question was whether to build the potentially interesting and elegant second proposal, or the skanky and bland first proposal.
